School district to offer low-cost preschool

Original post made on Apr 24, 2017

Calling it a blessing for Mountain View families, Mountain View Whisman School District board members gave resounding praise to a plan that will open up affordable, district-run preschool to all, regardless of family income.

you call "it a blessing for Mountain View families" not a blessing for the Mountain View families working people who pay for this! How about lowering our taxes!

Anybody know where this preschool will be and whether it's going to require an expansion of an existing preschool or creating a new program somewhere?

This is great news! Taxpayers should not be short-sighted, preschool done right saves society money in the long term.

Menlo Park school district has taken it one step further by offering full-day preschool, which is what working parents really need:

Preschool saves money? Please share your source for that statement.

And just to be clear... "common sense" is not a credible source.

So, that latest publicity stunt from the District is that a handful of middle-income families will get taxpayer-subsidized pre-school next year. Created a headline. Next: we need more child care too.

And we need an extra trillion dollars each year to balance the federal budget. It will all catch up to us.

As a (taxpayer supported) PK supporter for low income families, the only thing I find a bit disturbing about this development is: do poor families still get FREE PK? The suspension of the Title I funds, seems to eliminate Free for the lowest categories of family incomes. Like Otto - I understand the benefit:cost ratio of early education, if it is great and if it is continued through K-3rd. Anything else is ineffectual, in terms of academic proficiency by the end of elementary school.

If this eliminates FREE for the poorest, in order for mid-level subsidies, it becomes just another Welfare for the BETTER-off, rather than a cost effective poor-Target-Student program.

So I used to pay $1000 for a 6 hour preschool day including nap time. I looked into district preschool and my son was accepted but only for the afternoon 3.5 hr spot from what I remember, which meant no nap which he needed at that time. Also, little time outside, too many worksheets, and too little free or guided pay time (again from what I know). Is it worth saving $425 a month with a $105k or higher income? The jury is still out.
