Withholding law enforcement grants to communities that will not assist/work with Federal authorities seems like a moderate target step for those not fulfilling expectations. Enforcement of immigration laws as well as the establishment of immigration policy is an area where the Federal government rules. This is not an area where the federalism has granted control both to states and the Federal governmenmmt.

Didn't the government threaten to withhold highway funds from states that didn't pass motorcycle helmet laws and care seat belt wearing laws? CA was against those too at first, but soon "caved in". More posturing by the cities trying to get themselves in the news; like Hiwaii saying they would be "materially harmed" if Refugies couldn't immegrate to their state, when they haven't taken in one refugee yet! Bah humbug!

It's funny watching the right-wing talking points filter through to the commenters on our local paper. Here's a quick set of facts for you, Old Guy: states don't decide who gets settled in them, but the Democratic governor of Hawaii was in favor of Syrian refugees being settled there. Guess who was opposed to any refugees being settled in Hawaii? The Republican party of Hawaii.

Online elsewhere it is reported that the federal judge in SF has just issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against something.
