I wish they sell that property and have someone remodel that structure. It would really clean up the neighborhood.

Bail may be too low for these two low-lifes. They are why we need state prisons. Who was the landlord?

We've watched that house on Hope St. for almost 30 years. We've witnessed screaming tirades between Lela Rowles and her children, fights in the street in front of the house, drug addicted behavior, and, since Lela died and left the house to her children, the suspicious comings and goings that were obvious drug dealing. I'm glad Sam Rowles has been arrested and that the house may be sold, but I also know the terrible stories behind his behavior and addiction. Let's hope he can find recovery from him wasted life.

Nice that criminals can benefit from Prop 13 and its offshoots; Props 58 and 193.....Proposition 58 (excludes from reassessment transfers of real property between parents and children) and Proposition 193 (excludes from reassessment transfers of real property from grandparents to grandchildren) for this situation. These low lifes could no longer afford to live there if they did not have luxury of minimal prop tax that is likely 10% (or less) of what their hardworking neighbors are paying. Hopefuly the Feds will seize all assets and they will lose the house.

Where's your compassion? These kids are the product of a broken home. They are victims of their environment. How can you all be so callous?

I hear this constantly from progressives..... until it happens in their neighborhood of $1.5M cottages.

I've lived a block away for nearly three decades and although there has been no shortage of incidents at that house, frankly it has never affected my quality of life.

Maybe think twice the next time you go to the polls and vote for representatives that do nothing to address these situations. Society is to blame for allowing the situation to snowball to this extent.

Let the flaming commence....

Thank you Greg. Compassion is what is needed here.

yes, it was quite a show next door, and I commend MVPD on how organized and calmly this all went down. As far as them being neighbors, they have always been polite and in spite of their drug problems, are a caring family. Lila passed about 18 months ago. It's too bad they don't get the help they really need and the cycle repeats. There have been other people staying there, but in spite of their activities, they are low key, and quiet. I haven't heard any arguments in a very long time, and it's not a loud party house at all. Several years ago my cat/then kitten got out, Lila brought me to their back yard to search for him and gave me the ok to come in the yard w/out checking in, and on day 3 he was their in the side yard. She had more compassion that what several folks are exhibiting in their comments.

I don't understand what Kat finds un-"compassionate" about comments here regretting that a nearby house had meth, apparent drug-dealing, illegal weapons stockpiled, screaming tirades, fights (even a stolen and "pried-open" ATM machine).

Compassion is good. "Help they needed" is good. But these aren't complete absolutions from individuals' responsibility for their own behavior. I think that's part of Greg David's point.

In response to "My Opinion" in another neighborhood "Hopefully the Feds will seize all assets and they will lose the house."

My comment was made with a lot of sarcasm. It doesn't always come across in text.

There is a lot being overblown in the comments though. "Illegal weapons stockpiled"??? The report states one pistol was found and some ammunition. The pistol in itself is not "illegal", it was simply illegal for them to possess it as felons. The comments make it sound like these guys were running a major drug operation, a la New Jack City.

I am confused with all the talk about compassion.. "the suspects were in possession of firearms, methamphetamine and a pried-open ATM machine." These are not teenagers who stole a bike, or smoked some weed.

And regarding seizure of assets..Federal law allows law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to seize property, including money, from people convicted of certain federal crimes, such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime. With that said unclear if Feds are involved.

If this house is owned by family and not the criminals, it is unfortunate if it is siezed. But that's what happens when you commit a serious crime; you hurt yourself, your loved ones and society.

Yes, literally illegal weapons -- illegal in the context they were found, per the article text (which readers of these comments presumably have read): "Police said an investigation led them to believe the couple was stockpiling guns in the home. . . Police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said [the pair] are convicted felons and it's illegal for felons to have guns." That situation will trouble some neighbors. (If this information is overblown, then that complaint concerns the quoted police remarks, not comments here that cite them.)
