Graham school traffic safety upgrades come back

Original post made on Jan 23, 2017

It won't be cheap, but a package of safety upgrades near Graham Middle School might finally get the city's go-ahead. If approved by the City Council next week, the project would bring new bike lanes, crosswalks and other improvements along Castro Street that have long been sought by school officials and parents.

That's nice but what about Crittenden? There are a bunch of knuckle heads that never stop for some children crossing the wide avenue street and when one car stops on one lane, the idiots on the other lane are unaware and zip right through anyhow. Very dangerous. People have been using this strip between Shoreline/Rengstorff for drag racing funny-cars. What we really need on this street is a lighted crosswalks much like what is installed on Shoreline/California where if someone pushes the button, everything lights up and surely cars need to stop. This section of the city has been far too neglected long enough. We want to force drivers to slow down in this area especially around school hours in the morning and night. By the way there are two crosswalks- one nearest the schoo next to Terra Bellal and the other 200 yards away next to San Pierre St. Not only the safety of the kids are in stake but also some workers I've seen cross there at night. The area is poorly lighted.

It's not school specific, its DRIVER specific. You should see the circus of danger drivers using school neighborhoods to cut through cause daily.
Drivers SPEEDING and ROLLING STOP SIGNS through residential streets while the kids are walking to school and people are out walking their dogs. They're risking our lives so they can avoid a stoplight. Friends in the Cuesta area report the exact same thing. We're beginning to take traffic calming into our own hands but it would be great if the police were more present so we would not have to.

It's about time City Hall started focusing on the need community and safety needs of residents rather than catering to Google and developers. The issues never should have become issues. We need forward looking employees at City Hall not knee-jerk reacting ones that start identify problems only after someone is run down and killed.

Putting cops at schools and tweeting about it for a week or two has brought the current results. Maybe something more consistent and long term is needed MVPD? Unless the current situation is acceptable to you. Then just keep doing the same old same old.

Ok council, let's get this going! Either pony up the money or change the scope to fit your budget, but let's get this going.

I am still disappointed that Graham decided to eliminate the left turn out of their parking lot. We see this in action now and it's the mess I expected. More drivers turning right, since all have to. And just after looking left and turning right, they come to the first crosswalk, crossing 2 lanes in each direction, with some drivers stopping and others not, since they can't see that someone is in the crosswalk and there are no lights to tell them.

And, for those that wanted to turn left, they make a U-turn and cross that crosswalk a second time. Or, they could go turn right on El Camino and go down Phyllis, but this has become the "back way" to Huff, so it's backed up at that same time. Guess I'll stick with the U-turn.

The circus in front of Graham Middle school at drop off and pick up times is unreal. Cars and kids are everywhere, and it turns into a one lane road, leaving limited visibility at crosswalks (and non crosswalks). We need the crosswalks that light up there, and in downtown!!! Why hasn't this happened yet? As Mountain View's population expands, the problem will only get worse. We all know, our population isn't slowing down.

Would an electric sign advising drivers of their speed also help near Graham? Such signs slow traffic.

Re School Traffic safety, when is MV going to deal with dangerous Huff School pedestrian crossing at Grant Rd and Phyllis/Martens? Twice a day, this intersection is a highly toxic mix of school kids and frustrated, traffic-jammed commuters. The students and the commute traffic must be separated, and mere painted bike lanes and other minor changes won't do this. The only solution I can see would be to construct a pedestrian/bike underpass beneath Grant Rd to keep school kids safe and traffic free.

Good morning from Singapore.

It's definitely a great step forward if and when the council takes it. Steps such as this are long overdue. Children safety has to be of the utmost importance. I have always said that Palo Alto takes the lead from us in Mountain View but this time around we have to take their lead. They have done a remarkable job around Jordan Middle School; which our illustrious City Council should have a look at before final design/project is determined. Additionally, it's important that the same is done for Crittenden. We cannot continue to be a city that has double standards just like how we treat certain neighbourhoods.

@Gary: "Would an electric sign advising drivers of their speed also help near Graham? Such signs slow traffic."

There is an electric sign advising of speed on Miramonte just past Castro as one is heading down towards Shoreline, and it seems to me instead of cars slowing down, they instead speed up. I see it happen multiple times every single day. It's like a race track. The police could probably fund the entire project if they ticketed all the speeders on that stretch of road daily. (Maybe a stretch, but not by much.)

What probably would have been helpful since 2013 - which is how long we have been waiting for safety improvements on Castro Street near Graham Middle School - would have been to have a crossing guard on duty in the mornings before school and in the afternoons after school...at least as a temporary stop gap until the road improvement could be made. I'm still at a complete loss to understand why a crossing guard isn't out there for an hour in the mornings & afternoons every day when school is in session. It seems like a no-brainer to me, instead here we are going into the end of the school year for 2017 with NO safety improvements having been made. And in fact, as pointed out in the post above...the new driveway exit out of Graham which does not allow drivers to make a left turn, instead results in drivers now crossing through the crosswalk near Harpster and then at Sonia, where they often make a U-turn and hurriedly cross back through both crosswalks, now heading the other direction. So, prior to the change in the driveway exit configuration, the cars wishing to turn left, crossed through NO crosswalks as they headed back up towards Miramonte, and now they cross through two crosswalks FOUR times in order to get back up to Miramonte. Again, ridiculous and dangerous. An accident waiting to happen.

Oh, and the Greystar construction going on for another 18 months taking up a lane of Castro Street from El Camino Real up to Sonia does nothing to enhance the safety of the area. NOTHING.

What a waste of time and money! They could have solved this problem simply by prohibiting parking near the crosswalks. $200 of red paint and this would have been done years ago and save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Now they want to spend a MILLION dollars on something where there is no problem at all for 23 hours per day. And that other hour, the issue is that cars and especially big SUVs park along the road close up to the crosswalks, so people driving have reduced visibility of kids trying to use the crosswalk.

Just prohibit parking for 100-150 feet either side of the crosswalk, and don't wast that MILLION dollars of taxpayer money (with Mountain View paying 300K and OUR federal taxes being wasted on the rest.

This will only solve half the problem. Hopefully our newly appointed Police Chief Nowaski will get a better handle on this by placing police officers at all schools sites in the morning and afternoon. Old Chief Bosel couldn't seem to figure this out.

If a driver cannot see safely in a school zone why would they continue to drive at the posted speed limit, knowing there are children around? It's quite amazing how safe EVERYONE gets when the drivers quit avoiding the brake pedal at all costs.

Here's what to do, because you obviously did not know: When in a school and kids are present, if cannot see possible risks to kids because of an SUV, SLOW DOWN and be ready to bake as you creep past the visual obstruction. You don't just "go" and hope nobody jumps out, you drive as slowly needed, expecting a kid to jump out at anytime, Right? If not, you're a problem on the road.
When drivers slow down, everyone is better off.

The worst offenders at Graham are the parents dropping their kids off.
