Caltrain collision leaves one dead in Palo Alto

A man in his 60s died on Friday night after a train on the Caltrain right of way struck his vehicle at Charleston Road in Palo Alto, Caltrain officials said.

I'm pretty sure there is a guard stationed at this intersection. I drove by once, and he was sleeping, so I'm wondering how useful it was to have him/her there when this incident transpired. Did he/she get involved in any way?
