Raschke leads in LASD campaign spending

Original post made on Nov 1, 2016

Mountain View resident Tanya Raschke surged ahead of Los Altos resident Bryan Johnson in campaign spending in the bid for a seat on the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees, according to campaign finance reports filed Oct. 27.

Why is it relevant what someone's company is criticized for doing?

If the company had some interaction with the board, I might be able to see the relevancy, but this just seems random.

I cannot believe someone managed to create a full length article out of this data. It's $10K give or take a few thous. This is chump change.

Of course Rashke is outspending Johnson. It is the BCS playbook - raise a ton of shadowy cash and/or BCS money then try to obscure your connection to BCS while exaggerating your "LASD involvement"

Sour grapes much?

What's so "shadowy" about raising money to campaign - all typical stuff like flyer, newspaper ad and lawn signs. If anything, it shows that Tanya has a broad support and that as a candidate, she has worked diligently. She has knocked on many doors on my street - I have yet to see Bryan Johnson walk any precincts or even send a flyer in the mail. How does he expect to reach voters?? He must be relying on the PTA/establishment email channels to campaign FOR him...

Yes indeed, Brian Johnson has been campaigning at PTA events held at Public Schools where the other candidates were not invited. That's worth a bundle. He's not addressing the non-Parents though, which is odd since there
are 3 to 1 more non-parents than there are parents of kids in LASD. Reaching out at PTA meetings overlooks most of the voters.

On the other hand, one of the trustees has cooked up this service which uses email contact list to try to build a broader list of supporters based on the first level. It looks like the B.J. campaign is counting on this type of back channel to reach a majority of the voters.

Still, it's really quite objectionable to have candidate forums where not all the candidates are invited.

Care to provide more specifics? Which "PTA Events" are you referring to? PTA Events are open to the public, by the way. Tanya could go to them just as easily as Bryan could.

Raschke's bid for school board appears to be based on raising the most money to pursue a personal and select agenda for Bullis. Will the unaccounted for $3,000 in dark money ever be explained?

Tanya's previous claims to want to bring representation to Mountain View's attendance areas in Los Alto schools rings hollow when she is raising big money in Los Alto and Los Altos Hills. It seems to becoming clear she is backed by and running to represent Bullis and bring more contention and deep-pocket money squandering on lawsuits to the Los Altos School District. This is very troubling given their are parcel tax measures on the ballot.

Tanya also has used email lists from her neighborhood and homeowners association which her husband sits on the board of to push her candidacy. The use of such email lists is prohibited by law. At the same time the board her husband sits on denies requests for such email lists to campaign for improvements within the homeowners association which is allowed by law. It's the double-standard at work.

Tanya then used her Standford.edu work email domain to spam all her neighbors and was subsequently forced to recall the message by Stanford legal counsel. Indeed she cites lots of Stanford types as endorsement, but what exactly do any one them have to do with Mountain View politic? It seems like she is just trying to ride the Stanford brand name. Where are all her local endorsements that are not linked to Bullis or big money. I don't care about what people at Stanford think about endorsing her, I care about what people actively involved in improving LASD schools think.

As I have stated before, I also question Raschke’s judgment and commitment to the democratic process and the equal rights of all students in her run for a public office.

She states on her campaign website that she most recently served as the appointed Greater San Antonio Community Association representative alongside a diverse group of school and community volunteers on the LASD Facilities Master Plan Committee. This is interesting considering this neighborhood association has not had a meeting open to residents in the neighborhood in more than three years! In fact I don’t believe they’ve ever held any membership meetings except for a few ice cream socials that a handful of people attend. It appears to be a closed group of a few neighbors (with more than one Bullis parent on the board) pushing their exclusive political agenda or perhaps to pad a resume for public office. This is not fair considering many, if not the majority of children, in the Crossings attend Covington Elementary.

Within the Crossings neighborhood Raschke has also been very vocal against the rights of disabled persons. She has argued on online forums that portable basketball hoops should be allowed to be placed in sidewalk handicap access ramps since people in wheelchairs should be able to use driveways instead to access sidewalks. She has even pointed out that one member's request for reasonable accommodation under fair housing laws for ADA compliant mailboxes would come at an added expense of all members! Very impractical, insensitive and showing poor judgement for an aspiring elected public official!

Vote Johnson and save us all from dark money and the machinations of Bullis.

It seems strange that Bryan's form doesn't list any Facebook fees. I recall seeing a "sponsored " link to his campaign's Facebook page a few weeks ago.

Is it because his wife is a former Facebook big wig?

Now I see the real story. Thanks Crossings Resident. I refuse to believe people cannot see through Tanya and her sheep costume. Her deep roots in Bullis and a desire to get her way is certainly being exposed. Vote Johnson!

I am not and have not been an LASD parent but PTAs are prevented from campaigning in their bylaws and provide information only and must invite all candidates to any forum for a given race. It is well known that they required to do balanced information and take this very seriously. In fact, several sources report that Tanya was present at every PTA Candidate Forum!

Bryan Johnson is a parent at Santa Rita and is an ex-PTA president and active daily volunteer. I would guess that he is at regular business meetings that no one, including Tanya, receives a special invitation to. No one! These regular business meetings are open to the public, have agendas, minutes and regular advertised times.

Tanya can come to any and every PTA meeting. As Tanya had a child at Santa Rita 10 years ago before moving to BCS, she should know all this.

This mis-information is just like everything else Tanya does -- spin spin spin.

Vote for Bryan Johnson for LASD Board!

Speaking of spin, the above comments are all good examples of spin. "Dark Money" is not
used to refer to DEBT. When you spend more than you have, that's DEBT. Expenses are reported when they are incurred, not when the bills are paid. So that's not dark money.

Speaking of organizations with no public meetings, there is this KLASS thing that really doesn't exist. Allegedly Bryan is a member of KLASS which is raising some of the $100K to push for Measure GG. In he guise of his KLASS representation, Bryan has visited many groups to campaign, including PTA's etc. Who the heck is a member of KLASS? What are its rules about campaigning for school board members? Is it a 401c or what? Oh well. Speaking of dark money. See separate article for how the GG campaign reports raising $100K but not about how they are spending it--not much spent.
