An eco-dilemma: save redwoods or build bike lanes?

Original post made on Oct 22, 2016

Google's ambitious plans to build a futuristic headquarters in Mountain View's North Bayshore is hitting big snags over some of the neighborhood's deep-rooted inhabitants. About 200 trees, mostly redwoods, lining Shoreline Boulevard and nearby streets will need to be removed to make way for a slate of road improvements to accommodate the company's growing workforce.

Mountain View and its corrupted city council will stop at nothing to remove most or all or as many reminders of nature as exist within the city limits (except for manicured and maintained spaces, such as "parks") in order to better serve their corporate masters at Google. That the Sierra Club comes down against a real quality of life value (who does not enjoy seeing the redwoods as they make their way down Middlefield?) in favor of more paving and concrete is a travesty to those who have supported their work over time. If the trees are not "a species native to the Baylands" they are no less something which makes living in the area aesthetically pleasing as well as a reminder that humans aren't the only species around.
I ride a bike, I have no problems with the traffic configuration as it is, and think the "solution" of a bike path within the trees would be much preferred to chopping them down- but as it is, infinitely inferior to keeping the trees as they are. If the trees go, then there goes another piece of Mountain View's authenticity. But hey, let us not stop at more development, in the race to look more like Orange County, and kowtow to the wishes of our Great Corporate Citizen, Google!

How about just making the traffic lanes narrower and slower to make more room for bike lanes?
