Doesn't say that the door to the garage was left open. We has a break-in some time ago where they broke open the outer garage door and then the inner door. We have since reinforced the doors and door-jam to make it more difficult to do so.

If you post your address I can drop by with a crow bar and show you how easy is it to do so. Then next time perhaps you'll be a bit more sympathetic!

They also alert the police and your neighbors when your dog or cat farts or when a bird flies into your sliding door. They're a nightmare.

Sensitivity? Left his home wide open. Should we congratulate him for that or spread the word that not only is this risking property, it also attracts criminals who think the neighborhood is wide open.

Now Alan L is showing his true colors. He thinks that leaving a window "slightly open" is OK??? He is trying to convince the city that a "slightly open" window will keep burglars out.

I'm very concerned about the attitudes in this city. Most houses are in the million dollar range and are targets to the less affluent in the Bay Area. Leaving windows open is telling the world that it's ok to come in and take our stuff.

The tone of this thread in general makes me sad. The poor person's house got ransacked. Perhaps we should come together, have a neighborhood watch meeting and figure out how to tackle the problem. It's going to take more than imprisoning ourselves to combat this growing problem -attacking each other and particularly attacking the victim is not productive.

It's interesting to note that this resident went to the effort to set up video surveillance, yet failed to close their window and lock their door.

At the neighborhood watch meeting, perhaps we can figure out how to instill some common sense in our neighbors?

In the article, it states: "Video surveillance footage from the resident shows that a light blue or gray Sedan pulled up to his home and a tall, young man wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans got out of the car and disappeared from view near the victim's home, Nelson said."

Can you read or just insult? It states VERY CLEARLY that the resident had a video camera set up.

One consideration is to question all your assumptions. If an unimportant window
to a garage devoid of valuables is left home, a lot can happen.

Once in the garage, the crooked guy is shielded from observation. He can pry the
door open to get into the house and no one will notice. He can bash it in for that matter. So, the garage is important.

Put a deadbolt on the door from the garage to the home, and use it. But even that may not help. The typical chink in the armor of the garage is the automatic door opener, which can be opened by people with scanner remotes. So remember this too.

Get over it, and move on! The least you can do is install a decent security system. At least there were low quality cameras though

Please call out the specific neighborhood you live in so that your posts dos not reflect on all of Mountain View as standing behind anything you have said here.
