Council approves 144-unit apartment project on Ortega Avenue

Original post made on Sep 22, 2016

Despite quarrels over parking and student safety, the Mountain View City Council on Tuesday night gave unanimous approval to a 144-unit apartment project along Ortega Avenue. While the project includes five below-market-rate homes, this time, affordable housing concerns were sidelined by other conflicts.

Why are these people parking on the streets instead of their own garages...

Happy to see this move forward! It's not *quite* as close to transit as some other opportunities, but the general trend away from blocking housing due to parking concerns is a good thing, given our housing crisis and the major long-term trends towards transit / ridesharing services and away from car ownership.

The ol' RUBBER STAMP for another developer

Fact:
1. This property was approved in the late 1960s for a four story apartment development and was one of two properties in the City of Mountain View zoned for high density residential.
2. The parking issue began in January of 2012 when people with enclosed garages began using their garages to run landscaping, party rental, auto mechanic, etc. businesses out of their units and for basic storage.
3. A man ran an auto sales business over the internet wherein he bought and sold vehicles but parked them in the neighborhood and at the shopping center.
4. One of those who complained about the project and parking had up to four vehicles at one time that he parked on the street.
5. Those who advocate for low income need to follow their own advice.
Reality is different from what is being said by "pundits."

Is this Matt Pear's house (former mayor)?

Yes it's the Pear House. Except for his romantic dealings w women, I have found Mr. Pear to be an honorable and trustworthy person

I'm curious about the history of this parcel and why it looks like it's been abandoned for 50 years. Can anyone enlighten us?

If there are 3 stories of apartments, but the rendering clearly shows 4 stories, what's on the ground floor?

And, for the record, I approve of the development. Thanks, Council!

Viewing the Greater San Antonio area as a transit community, and approving higher density construction is a little ironic. While the area does have easy access to shopping and transit for work, it does not have a local school, nor is local transit set up to get students to the *three* different elementary schools they are sent to (Almond, Covington and Santa Rita), four if you count the local charter school. So we have this strange situation where commute communities on the other side of El Camino, who get in their car for everything have local, walkable schools and the potentially transit communities near Caltrain and bus centers are set up such that all the local schools are a drive away. Maybe a little planning could be done?!

Isn't that what school buses are for?
