Two vie for open seat on LASD board

Original post made on Sep 2, 2016

Two parents will be facing off this November for a seat on the Los Altos School District board of trustees to replace board member Tamara Logan, who announced her resignation earlier this year. But voters in the school district won't be deciding on the two, four-year seats that were up for re-election this year, after only two people filed for candidacy by the deadline.

Finally someone from MV on the LASD board. We have always been the stepchild. Send us to Almond? No to Springer? Now to Santa Rita and then off to Covington. Time for MV to be represented. Thank you Tanya Raschke for running and representing ALL of us. Next year there will be three of five members of the board from Covington School -- which may explain why Covington is "off the table" as consideration for more efficient use of existing land.

@MV resident

While it's good to see some one from Mountain View one running, I'm genuinely concerned about the authenticity of Raschke's statements, given her Bullis background and her claim to want to represent all the communities that make up the district, particularly those not from Bullis, those children with special needs, minorities or those that aren't part of the 88% of students meeting or exceeding standards.

I'll echo the reporter here when he says, regarding Raschke, that it "sounds a little jarring to hear" some of the things she says. Raschke needs to explain such comments before getting my vote. Others voting should demand the same.

Mountain View representation on the LASD Board is critical. We are the only unrepresented community ON the board. In fact, the Covington neighborhoods are drastically OVER represented now with Steve Taglio, Pablo Luther leaving, but Jessica Speiser coming on, and Sangeeth Peruri.

I also think it is long overdue to have Mountain View representation on the LASD Board. But I also share some of the reservations about Ms. Raschke. During the height of the conflict between BCS and LASD, Ms Raschke and her husband Matt were militant pro-BCS supporters, thought this article clearly tries to play that down (or she tried to play it down to the reporter). They both openly advocated for more litigation, helped lead the BCS protest at the district office, and repeatedly trashed the sitting LASD board members on many online forums discussing the issues. I suspect she is very much a "stalking horse" candidate seeking to get BCS representation on the board much more than Mountain View representation.

I certainly hope that intelligent people will do their own thinking rather than be swayed by a hearsay from a "Dead Pirate Roberts"... And I challenge this poster to back up the claims like she "openly advocated for more litigation" and is she "seeking to get BCS representation"....

Her campaign website is www.tanya4lasd.com - hope the good readers will do their own homework.

@Informed Voter -- Everyone should absolutely do their own homework. I would encourage interested voters to search through the history on the Los Altos Schools Community group in Facebook to see many examples of what I described below. One can also search on both Mr. and Ms. Raschke's name, along with BCS on Google and will find numerous examples of their "assertive" advocacy on behalf of BCS in the conflict with LASD. Finally, I clearly said I *suspect* her primary goal is to represent BCS on the board versus representing MV. This is clearly a statement of opinion not fact, and does not require backup beyond what I've already provided.

Have a nice day, and don't forget to vote...

@ dead pirate Roberts - Disparaging a candidate anonymously as you're doing, says a lot more about you than the candidate...

@Guest -- First, everyone on this thread (and the vast majority of people posting in the Town Square forums) is anonymous. Including you. Second, I did not "disparage" the candidate. I simply question her primary motives based on her (and her husband's) very strong advocacy on behalf of BCS during the height of the conflict with LASD. There are many examples of this available online for anyone interested in looking for it. How does pointing that simple fact out equate to "disparagement" in your mind???

Tanya and her record are all the evidence one needs to know or understand. The LASD crowd will eat her for snack. Her motives are obvious to all who know her. Dread Pirate don't waste your time posting; she will lose by a landslide. Bryan Johnson is a stand up guy and will have no trouble against this opponent.
