LASD agrees to share parcel tax with charter school

Original post made on Aug 9, 2016

The Los Altos School District board of trustees agreed Monday night to put a $223-per-parcel tax on the November ballot. Unlike past measures, the resolution calls for an estimated $300,000 in taxpayer revenue to go to Bullis Charter School for educational services.

It is about time the district recognizes the charter school as a real part of the district. But it is also about time for the charter teachers to join the los altos teachers association LATA since they get all the benefits that are negotiated for the other teachers. they should support the other teachers.

So out of $2.8M in parcel tax proceeds, BCS would get $300K? Why is that compelling to them? What would be the split if you did it ratably based on student population? Surely more than $300K.

Is LASD sure that BCS would take $300K? Feels like BCS could raise $300K from a couple of donors or their annual auction. The PR optics of BCS being the reason for increased parcel taxes doesn't seem to justify taking only $300K in proceeds.

Some basic arithmetic. $223/$193=1.1554 more tax per parcel. Total tax collected increases by $389,000, not $300,000.

But the split is determined by the student headcount. Could be $350K or could be $450K.
It depends on the student counts at both public school systems in LASD--traditonal vs. charter. Charter has been rising in total numbers; LASD has been in decline in total numbers.

What are you complaining about? There are 10 schools (including BCS) and BCS would be getting more than 1/10th of the money. BCS is getting almost a 1/9 share! $300K is a lot of money. And, no, BCS could not easily raise this "from a couple of donors at their annual auction". BCS parent aren't any wealther than LASD parents.

BCS is as big as 2 of the LASD schools put together. :) It has both an elementary school and a middle school. Plus it's getting bigger.

BCS = Pariah. I hear the comments. People don't discuss it much in public because they know as well.
