Knightscope upgrades tot-injuring bot

Original post made on Aug 5, 2016

Mountain View's homegrown security-bot company, Knightscope, is trying to restore its image after a dust-up last month in which one of its security robots patrolling Stanford Shopping Center knocked down a 17-month-old.

You'll never make it lawyer proof. The lady who's kid got bumped just killed this idea for those customers who have liability insurance policies.

Why was the child allowed to be running around? This was not a playground.

Didn't the full I nvestigation, as reported here in the Voice, say that the robot avoided the child when he ran at it, then stopped when the kid ran at it again, and was motionless when the kid ran into it? And the parents agreed that the robot never "ran over" the kid as first reported? Seems somebody is always trying to blame something on someone else, despite the evidence.

From what I read about the "incident" at Stanford shopping center, it sounded like the parents were seeking $$$ over a non-incident. I have frequently seen the robot there since I shop there a lot and it never has moved fast at all.I have seen children near it. I understand the child did not need medical attention.

Yeah, completely unfair to the company that makes the robot to give any credence to the family's claim. This title is nothing but sensationalist considering the facts available on the incident.

Also the title makes it sound like the bot is a robot designed to injure "tots" and now it has been upgraded to better go about this task.

If the mall would have hired Mall Cop Paul Blart, none of this would have happened in the first place!!

Would the parents have allowed the child to run into an elderly person with a cane or walking frame? Would they have allowed the child to run into a family pushing a stroller? Would they have allowed the child to run into a senior on a mobility scooter, or someone with a wheelchair? Would they have allowed a child to run into a security guard on a Segway? The answer to all these is of course no. So why did they allow the child to run into an activated piece of machinery?

This is not a playground. Parents must monitor their children to make sure they don't run into moving traffic on roadways or fellow Mall users. They wouldn't allow them to touch a parked vehicle in the parking lot, so why are they allowing their child to run up and interact with a piece of machinery?
