PSA: Robo-calls polling Rent control

Original post made by Joel Z, Waverly Park, on Jul 31, 2016

Calls with caller ID of 800 888 4555 have called my home 3 times a day for about a week. Various "whose calling" sites identified it as a polling agency that typically asks to speak to the woman of the house, so today I handed the phone to my wife. A person actually answered this time and identified that they wanted to poll the household on Rent Control in Mountain View. Perhaps I need to begin calling the sponsors of the 2 competing questions at all hours of the day. The woman on the other end of the line said they would take our number off there list. I know that political and polling entities are not bound by the "do not call" list, but it takes a special kind of stupid to think that someone not wanting phone solicitations all suddenly going to be willing to interrupt their day to answer polling questions.

What can they tell you to get you to vote NO? That is probably the ultimate question. How about if there is a competing measure right there on the same ballot?

Normally I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize however if they're polling about rent control I will make sure to start.

So I can let them know NO RENT CONTROL

Those landlord associations will stoop so low as to bother the voters and annoy them enough to vote against anything related to rent control.

We must absolutely enact rent control and shoe those outsiders who really own the city.

Had the same call, I asked to be taken of the list, the caller proceeded to tell me they are calling all registered Mountain View voters, so "no" we cannot take you of the list, you are a registered voter.....
Do not call list does not apply to them.

Polls work by sampling so they would never call every voter for a poll to ascertain opinions. This might be a push poll where they are seeking to spread information and raise awareness of a particular way they want the "polled" to vote.
