How easily can a mentally ill person get a gun in this state?

Legally? Hard, but not impossible.
Illegally? Easy. Costs more, unless you steal a gun.

He needs to be booked into a mental institution, not jail.

He didn't shoot at LinkedIn, so I guess none of his personalities invited him to join their professional network.

@Mnm

I'm afraid that I think the real issue is a social issue, not a legal one.

Of course I'm not saying that the laws should easily permit a mentally ill person to get a gun. But let's not forget how easy it was for this person to build bombs. Tighter control of guns, bullets, and gasoline (?!?!) wouldn't prevent this.

You'd be surprised how many dangerous things are available without license or background checks, and a creative and more scientifically-minded person can make some fearsome things out of easily obtained materials.

I agree with you that it shouldn't be easy for unstable people to get their hands on deadly weapons; but guns and bullets are the only things that can be used as deadly weapons.

But I think we'd be better off if we spotted people *before* they went nuts.
