City sniffs out food-composting program

Original post made on Sep 4, 2016

Mountain View homeowners could soon be prodded to compost more of their food scraps under a new waste-management program designed to shrink the trash pile sent to landfills.

Recently there was a survey to which on 335 responded. The first question was:

Would you participate in a food scraps program (food and food-soiled paper placed in yard trimmings cart and collected weekly)?

78% responded yes.

Several important issues to note: this question is misleading in that it does not mention that regular trash pick-up will be reduced to every other week (it does address this later in the survey). I am certain had that been more clear the "yes" vote would be dramatically reduced. Also, I'd love to see the demographic that completed this survey and am fairly certain it is mostly single, older residents who have much less need for weekly trash disposal than those of us with families, It makes sense that this demographic is more likely to complete these surveys.

City Council; please give this more consideration. This is not a viable solution for those of us with families.

Will we be allowed to put food-soiled cardboard into the big yard waste bins for weekly pickup?

If so, what is officially considered "food-soiled"? If I crack an old egg into Amazon delivery boxes, do they qualify for disposal in the yard-waste bin?

It would be great to be able to use the yard-waste bin for weekly cardboard pickup (the weekly garbage and the bi-weekly recyclable containers are too small so I always have boxes in my garage).

@MVResident2003 points out just one of a multitude of items wrong with this survey.

1. The survey was difficult to find. Not straightforward at all to locate.

2. My recollection is that I learned about it in the city's quarterly Recycling insert. If that was the primary notification method, it's hardly a way to get a well-rounded response.

3. The questions were incredibly slanted...as if to ensure a pre-determined outcome.

Why not start with:

Q: Would you be content keeping your garbage service the same as it is today?

Q: Are you interested in recycling your food scraps?

Q: If yes to the above, would you give up 50% of your regular garbage collection days to do it?

Instead, the questions were convoluted, and never addressed whether residents just want to keep things as is (possibly with a slight price increase).

And speaking of the price increase. Residents are paying a price for all of the business construction going on in Mountain View. But, the presumption is those projects are bringing more money to the City. So, how exactly have City services improved for residents? No new parks. No new services. No transportation solutions. Cutbacks in some hours and service levels. And now, we need to either cut back garbage service or pay higher rates. Why doesn't the City subsidize the increase?

@I Fill Up My Garbage: About 5 years ago I called Recology and asked for another recycling bin. They dropped it off at the curb the same week. With two bins, I rarely run out of room for all those Amazon boxes.
