Bye-bye for BookBuyers in Mountain View

Original post made on Apr 30, 2016

It was a somber event that Friday night as BookBuyers opened its doors to begin liquidating its inventory of more than 300,000 titles. Falling behind on its rent, the business announced in recent days that it needed to shutter its Castro Street shop in the hope that it could reopen in a cheaper location.

This is really sad. I haven't lived there since 2000, but this was the one place I looked forward to going to when I came over to visit.

This is an honest to goodness tragedy. BookBuyers is the biggest and best used book store in the South Bay and I have been a regular shopper there for over 20 years.

I am very sad that we are losing BookBuyers. They have been a mainstay here for many years and lots people enjoy buying books there. The atmosphere at BookBuyers has always been relaxed, friendly, and enjoyable. I must say that I am dismayed to see so many stores and restaurants closed and sitting vacant because of the high cost of renting here in Mountain View. Pet Pals recently closed there doors for good also. All these stores and restaurants are victims of the expensive rent increases that the property owners are imposing on them. All them have closed and moved on to a whole different area. All of this makes me very sad.

I always enjoyed visiting BookBuyers when I was testing at Ames (I worked for Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, TX). I will always remember how nice it was to have dinner at one of the restaurants along Castro Street and then browse through the books at BookBuyers. I was last there in 2011. Now retired, It really depresses me to think they are out of business. I still have good memories and books though!
