Solar-powered plane stopping in MV on around-the-world flight

Original post made on Apr 22, 2016

Does anyone know if kids willing to venture out at night can watch this historic landing?

Doug Pearson is a registered user.

I wish them all a safe flight. The Solar Impulse is a fragile craft, but can fly for a long time, as you pointed out. Good weather is crucial and other problems can (did) happen, but both pilots and their crew have kept on keeping on.

Thanks for the solar impulse.com link.

Go, team!

@teacher,

I reached out to the organizers to ask if/how members of the public can attend. Can you send me an email, so I know whom to contact if I receive a response?

Thanks,

Technically, this is Solar Impulse 2 and is not the first airplane to be able to capture energy during the day to fly all night. That was Solar Impulse 1 which was the airplane that visited Mountain View and flew across the US three years ago.

Flightradar24.com is tracking Solar Impulse II, registration number HB-SIB. Destination is Moffett Federal Airfield, airport identifier NUQ (KNUQ).

He is landing at 11:30 pm tonight. Hard to watch him fly over Mountain View.

His flight was strange---coming in, he would go toward S.F., then turn around for 15 miles or so, then go back toward the City, then back west again, then back---then finally he spent a lot of time going back and forth over the G.G. bridge. Strange---maybe winds were blowing him back?

@Alan: hanging out over the Golden Gate for photo opportunities, sight seeing, and probably just plane fun. Don't know about the hour and a half of loitering in the dark off Pescadero. Either waiting for completion of Moffett preparations or waiting for best landing conditions (cooler air, calmer wind, less traffic). Could not find any notes about it. Hope we get a heads-up on the departure schedule.
