Council: build senior housing on downtown lot

Original post made on Apr 20, 2016

Sensing a ripe opportunity to create more affordable housing downtown, Mountain View City Council members on Tuesday gave initial support for redeveloping a Bryant Street parking lot into a dense apartment complex for seniors.

Just what the heck is this liberal and housing crazed city council thinking? There's not enough parking downtown already and they want to make it even worse??? "Affordable Housing" is just a cruel myth. The housing costs just the same as before, it's just the rest of us who pay the subsidies. "Socialism works until you run out of other people's money" --- Margaret Thatcher said something like that.

I bet if you reserved some units for city staff, the project could be completed in half the time.

IMO how nice to see "a progressive" bent to City Council discussions on senior and below market rate housing. (I turned 65 in Feb. :) How do we use Community Assets [publicly owned lands]? How do we get the highest community Return On Assets? I think this is one of the ways. Use publicly owned land in responsible ways for increasing community affordable housing.

I know I'll be supporting McAlister (Nov.) and Showalter, who have consistently talked and VOTED for this type of community responsibility. I think Tsuda continues to be a senior staff member accurately gauging the 'collective pulse of the community' and this elected Council.

SN is one of those rarest of political animals, a Progressive Republican. He cannot apply for BMR housing.
(MV needs walking/biking? maybe?)

The parking needs to be made up somewhere else, and we'll need a new place to put the farmers' market on game days.

* What will happen with the vacant gravel lot on the other side of California? Could that be built into an additional garage?
* Can the city work with Caltrain to put a second (and maybe a third) level on the Caltrain parking? With surging ridership, this will be necessary sooner or later. And then, maybe, the farmers' market can go on the top level year-round.
