CHP seeks public's help with fatal hit-and-run

The California Highway Patrol is seeking the public's assistance in identifying and locating a vehicle involved with a fatal crash earlier this month on northbound U.S. 101 just south of Woodside Road.

Unless it's a custom plate there are only 1000 possible 4AYY--- plates and only one is going to be a brown minivan.

@Al:

The district attorney may prefer a license plate number from an eyewitness, rather than picking the first brown van with the 4AYY--- prefix. After all, the person who identified the partial plate could be wrong: it might be 4AVY or 4AYV or even 6XSN---.

And what if the plates were on a vehicle which they were not issued to? There are probably dozens of other scenarios which might end up with the wrong identification. If the DA hauls in the wrong person, it looks really bad to the community.

Anyhow, I hope the authorities catch the correct miscreant.
