I love that everything came out OK, but I'm at a loss.

What problem manifests itself with these sort of symptoms?
It sounds like he was conscious with no airway obstruction but staring and not breathing, or maybe minimally breathing?
Has anyone heard of this or what might cause this in children?

@So Strange: Children can have heart attacks and other cardiac problems, although they are rare. Some seizures also cause "frozen" staring, but I think usually the child keeps breathing.

I'm glad that the first responders in our community are there to help, and that they saved this little boy! Best wishes to his family as he recovers.
