City eyes Castro road diet

Original post made on Feb 23, 2016

Taking up the idea of a road diet, Mountain View officials are considering a slate of street changes that would trade car lanes along Castro Street for extra space for bikes and pedestrians near Graham Middle School. The package of modifications, which would extend from El Camino Real north to Miramontes Avenue, would bring Castro Street down to two car lanes, but would add bike lanes and a variety of new safety measures.

Like Mr. McAlister, I have big concerns about traffic impacts. Especially when traffic impacts a kid trying to walk or bike to school, on a relic of 1950s road design.

I have not noticed any concern about the influx of new cars and traffic due to the new development on the corner of Castro and El Camino this will add a lot of traffic and narrow the road give me a break

A much simper and faster way to protect kids, with ZERO impact on traffic flow, would be to use red paint and prevent parking on Castro between Graham and El Camino. That would provide visibility for both cars and kids at the crosswalks.

But instead the city is wasting taxpayer money on a super-deluxe approach that will, as soon as the new apartment get done at El Camino, have horrendous traffic problems especially during morning rush hour.

The only good thing is in this case it is US taxpayers not just Mountain View residents getting stuck with the bill.

And a little context - 3 minor incidents in 25+ years is not a crisis deserving $850K of spending. The time, money, and effort would be better spent on getting bikes quickly off Castro in downtown, where riding is truly a hazard.

I am happy to see this happening. With safer pedestrian/bike paths, maybe more people will considering walking and biking more. Conversely,I can see the potential problem of people using side street alternatives. I know that Latham street is often used that way. Over the past decade, I have felt less safe biking on this street than I had when I initially moved.

I understand that people have different living/working circumstances, but people driving are the cause of of traffic. If we want to alleviate traffic, we have to get people out of their cars. (especially the loners)

Please seriously consider lowering the speed limit here to 20mph and installing photo radar.

Also, the other end of Castro, between Villa and California St should become a permanent pedestrian mall, with no cars. Similar to Pearl St Mall in Boulder, Colorado. This would be a major plus for Downtown Mtn. View businesses and atmosphere.
