Assembly candidates square off in Democratic forum

Original post made on Feb 22, 2016

The race to succeed Assemblyman Rich Gordon in Sacramento kicked off in earnest on Sunday afternoon at a forum in Los Altos when five candidates looking to represent the 24th District offered their thoughts on high-speed rail, affordable housing, the legalization of marijuana and other issues of interest to Silicon Valley.

Among these five, only one (Veenker) had filed papers to actually run as of 4:15 pm last Friday - as far as the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters Office knew. Candidates must take out papers and bring back nominating petitions signed by at least 40 district voters. Two had done both. A total of six had taken out papers. The deadline to file is March 11.

Anyone better for the job? These people seem like they are here to pickup a nice paycheck and hefty pensions.

"Jerry Hill is a former Republican. Hillary Clinton is a former Republican. Elizabeth Warren is a former Republican," Kasperzak said. "That says to me that good people learn and change, and that's what I'd been able to do.""

Kasperzak, trying to justify his going back on his campaign promises. Plus it shows how 2 faced career politicians are. Oh today I'll be a republican and maybe tomorrow a democrat.

Hillary Clinton was a Republican in her only her first year of college. Her positions are still rather Republican. Mike Kasperzak switched parties just 9 years ago in his 50's - evidently to run for partisan office. His positions seem to shift with the political winds. Great to read he has taken a position for high speed rail (HSR) -an utter waste of probably $200 billion. If ever in operation, HSR may well be derailed by one simple terrorist attack. It would be an easy target. In the near and far future, transportation - like many activities such as schooling - will need to be decentralized.

Did none of the candidates bring up reducing barriers to building more housing in general as part of improving the housing situation? How about working to mitigate the distortions introduced by Proposition 13? I'm particularly curious as to what Berman had to say given Palo Alto's on-going moves actually increasing restrictions on building more housing: Web Link
