A touch of New England

Original post made on Feb 19, 2016

Our beloved Dungeness crab season might be finally getting underway, given last week's lifting of a three-month health warning that arose from a local toxic algae bloom. (Recreational crabbing has resumed, while commercial is still on hold.) In the meantime, we can take advantage of that East Coast crustacean delectation, lobster, right here on the Peninsula.

Drunken Lobster is our now go to place! What a fun place to eat, feels just like a lobster shack we visited in Maine. The interior is so unique, love the vintage pictures and the lobster trap lights! The lobster rolls are a favorite, but so far all of the food (chowders, fish and chips, shrimp poor boy, salads) have all been fresh and delicious! We met the owner, he is always there and he is so committed to making everything from scratch and that the quality of the ingredients are top notch. If you haven't tried it yet, you won't be disappointed.

Yes! "Drunken Lobster" was great! Mr. Langevin has set up a fine little, casual restaurant - the clam chowder I had (TWICE) was excellent! I look forward to returning to try more of his offerings.

So far I've had their clam chowder and a shrimp po'boy, with fries. Enjoyed everything so far :)

How are you able to afford their prices?

I've walked by Drunken Lobster (it used to by a Gyro place?) and when I first checked the prices, my jaw dropped... I was under the impression the po' boy was much more than $20 (maybe it was advertised as an unbreakable combo?)...

Is there something missing from this article to make it seem relatively cheap at $20?

I did wait around to see someone order (and they got a po' boy). I remember being disappointed at the size (think "kid-sized hotdog roll" versus an Ogungquit lobster hoagie!).

The person who ordered seemed happy, but they ate it in like 3 bites. I would've been sad if I had paid the combo amount and received such a small "touch".

The thing w/ lobbies is that they're pretty easy to do at home. They are not a cheap material to start with, but I agree that my past disappointment with the portion/price ratio drove me to discover that i can make them at home if I want, easily and much less expensive. The key is getting a good roll, and I'm sorry, but the HK bakery was not a selling point to me.
Once you have the roll and the recipe for your dressing, you can either get live lobs locally or splurge and have them delivered from Maine. Either way you can have a "portions be damned" feast without the "price-tag be damned" bill. Remember though, you ARE eating lobster...it's not cheap, but it doesn't have to be expensive. My tips on avoiding the outrageous cost of abalone is next.

Too Busy: Your sticker-shock complaint surfaces routinely about all of the several restaurants on our peninsula serving specialties based on imported (east-coast) lobster. It goes with the territory -- you're seeing the cost of imported specialty ingredients. (Still, some might say, cheaper than a trip to New England. . .)

Dungeness crab would be the local counterpart, and its market prices here are normally cheaper. But (as everyone knows) this year is weird in that regard.

There's always fish and chips. . .
