CalTrain Extorsion on Saturday Evening

Original post made by Mahesh, Whisman Station, on Feb 9, 2016

Hello All,
I am not sure how many of you have heard this story. Many of us who took the CalTrain to SF from Mountain View Station after having paid a valid parking fees found our cars missing as it was towed.
Supposedly there where signs posted, no one saw it and it said unrestricted parking on Sat and Sun. Over 140 cars were towed according to cab drivers. CalTrain lied saying 20!
I came back with 2 young children at 10:20P (unfortunately my phone had died) so I had to take a taxi back home charge my phone and call the Transit Police in San Mateo. They made me come there to get a clearance certificate. Waited for almost 2h with over 20 people. The police department did not care if people had young children, a lady even pleaded Sir please help me I have a 3 months old child. He did nothing, said just wait - this is how our tax payers $$ is wasted folks.
Then had to drive to Campbell and wait for another 1.5h coz the tow company dudes won't show up. Paid a $400 fines at Bobby's Tow shop, who was using F bombs on all customers and threatened us that he will not release the car if we showed an attitude and blamed the San Mateo Police as the culprit. San Mateo blamed Caltrain.
CalTrain customer service called and they gave a run around. Customer service said do what you want, it is what it is. You don't read the signs you pay !
I told the guy if it just me and a few others I agree, there are 140 people affected. Also why did you sell the parking ticket to me when parking was NOT allowed. He had no good answers, sounded like a rude dude paid to act tough.

Just doing a simple math. Even with a 140 people who have spent an average of $500, that is $140,000 AND ATLEAST 5H of time wasted.

I am not into suing anyone, but if a lawyer stepped out - this sounds like a class action law suit on CalTrain. I am sure there will be 100's of people who will join this cause.
CalTrain has zero consideration, a Govt organization wich has a DONT care mentality and not considerate to the public which funds its existence.

"Supposedly there where signs posted"
Yes, there were.

"...no one saw it"
I did.

It was also in the local stories about how to get around SB weekend. That's how I first heard about it. I made other plans that day.

Tow companies are notoriously terrible(repeat: TERRIBLE!) to deal with. You have to suck it up and own it though. There's no victory for you here, not even an emotional one.

You should sue the NFL for hijacking our public transit system for their private event. I don't blame Caltrain for doing the best they could with their limited resources.

Well, here's another example: Sometimes they are over-bagged, but many times parking meters still work when they put up the temporary "No Parking" signs as street work is being done.
It does not give you a free pass because it still allows you to drop a quarter in.

If the signs are up, you're out of luck, and they were indeed up, even if you missed the weeks of publicizing the closure in the media.
