Getting around Mountain View on Super Bowl Sunday

Original post made on Feb 1, 2016

On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7, city leaders are warning residents that many streets near the downtown transit center will be closed, and people without Super Bowl tickets won't be able to ride the VTA light-rail line.

Now it looks like Obama will be in town this weekend to further complicate things.

If only there were already VTA express buses with dedicated lanes on El Camino Real. That would help get customers to and from the stadium - NOT. But how about that expensive VTA light rail which can carry dozens of people right to and from the stadium? Dozens. Thank goodness for light rail and the foresight of the brilliant transporation professionals working so diligently at the VTA - NOT. Well, at least we can still watch the Super Bowl on television that is free - NOT.

@VTA Does What:

The Super Bowl will be televised live on CBS (KPIX 5) locally. I can get reception on my rabbit antenna connected to my television. No cable/satellite service necessary.

How much did you pay for the TV and antenna?
It's only free if you watch it in Best Buy's display area, or similar

You're only off by three orders of magnitude. VTA has carried about 12,000 people - each way - to and from Levi's Stadium for past events, and that's how many tickets VTA is selling for light rail to the Super Bowl. (They requiring everyone who wants to take light rail to the Super Bowl to buy in advance, to make sure not to get swamped like in the New Jersey Super Bowl a couple years ago.)

Party at my house. Bring lots of beer, chips and dips, wings, ribs, hot dogs, pizza.. I am going to be really hungry that day. At least I have big TV and two friendly dogs that will lick you to death if you let them. Avoid downtown!

Sad, just sad. Our parking for the MV light rail & Cal Train are horrible and minimal. MV has done nothing to offset the auxiliary parking areas it once had. What have they done with the Google fund? Check out our elected officials pay stubs or where they've invested their monies for the answer. [Portion removed due to offensive language]

@@Reader:

Okay, so the television sitting at home connected to the cheapo antenna wasn't free, but then again, I use the TV to watch varied content (PBS mostly, some other live sports) both through OTA reception as well as via my AppleTV set top box and things like rental DVDs from the library, etc.

I don't look at my television as a Super Bowl-specific expense. If I needed to place a guess, my guess is that the Super Bowl will comprise less the 0.5% of my total TV viewing time. If I buy a $800 TV and keep it six years, I'm probably spending maybe 13-14 cents per Super Bowl game.

Of course, it is free if you go to a friend's house to watch the game but I'd probably bring some food and drinks to the host. :-)

Hey, it's only one day. It's not like we're stuck in gridlock for 3 weeks, like Santa Clara and SF. Just go to Sunday brunch in Los Altos, Palo Alto, or Menlo Park instead. The restaurants there beat the daylights out of the pathetic mix that MV has to offer.

Did folks notice that Central Expressway will be closed starting 6am Sunday from Shoreline Blvd to Ferguson Drive? Lots of people use Central Expressway -- even on the weekends -- and not just MV residents.

I dropped a note to the Voice a few days ago asking if they could find out more about what detours and plans are being put in place. Also a request to please publicize this a bit more. Hopefully they can get an update from the MVPD or others to add to this story.

There could be a lot of frustrated drivers from up and down the area, not aware that Central Expressway will be shut down.

Guys, I have good news. Everything is going to be okay. Really. It's just another Levi's event. Your life will go on.

Go Panthers.

OMG. I CANNOT believe people are upset over some Sunday road closures. Are local people that clueless about alternate routes? Plan ahead folks. My gosh, it simply is not a big deal.
I have a feeling, and I'm not making any accusations, but I think some people who really don't like the idea of the SB being here will make a big deal about any minor change they may have to make from their normal routine.
The rest will see, it'll be a blip of a non-event unless you're trying to get to the game.

@Carol: When I asked on MVPD's Facebook page, they confirmed that Central Expy traffic will be diverted onto Middlefield. I agree that this hasn't been publicized well. This diversion has the potential to create an enormous mess in the North Whisman and adjacent neighborhoods, so I wish it would be communicated clearly.

Sunday traffic is always light, and SB Sunday traffic is exceptionally light. The qty of cars on the road won't be enough to create much of a problem at all let alone an enormous mess.

Agree with those who say this will have minimal impact. Levi's has a 70,000 capacity which is the same for the Super Bowl as it is for any 49'ers game (except when season ticket holders blow it off). And in this case, there will be way fewer local fans attending the game. Out-of-towners staying in SF or San Jose are unlikely to go to the game via Mountain View. Mountain View doesn't even have a large hotel where fans can stay.

I do not agree that this will have a minim,al impact. While parked vehicles may be fewer on Sunday than most other days, that does not mean that there is a lot less traffic passing through.

I believe that closing Castro and Central Expressway will have significant impacts on traffic and send cars flooding through neighborhood streets that are ill equipped to handle large volume traffic flows. As I live in Old Mountain View, I expect my neighborhood and street to take the brunt of this ill-conceived conceived idea.
