Walgreens to close Mountain View store

Original post made on Jan 19, 2016

The drug-store chain Walgreens is planning to close down one of its Mountain View locations later this month. On Jan. 28, the company will shutter its Walgreens store at the corner of Rengstorff Avenue near Central Expressway, according to notices posted around the store.

This makes me sad. For years now my husband and I have utilized this Walgreens. While is it an older store, it was very convenient for us and the staff in the store and pharmacy were helpful and pleasant. We live in Rex Manor and made a habit of walking there to shop. It's nice that there is another Walgreens in Mtn View but it is not in walking distance and it is situated at a weird and hard to access intersection. It stinks because we have no options on this side of town for a pharmacy. I know Safeway has one but it is a different environment, grocer vs. drug store. Maybe someone will put a nice drugstore in the shopping plaza that Fresh and Easy just vacated.....hint hint.

kgirl - I believe Target has a pharmacy. That's over your way.

It does have impact on the infrastructure of our area. Fresh & Easy is gone, and now Walgreen's is following. Safeway #0705 isn't too far, but it does limit places in the area for grocery items and other sundries; necessitating further trips, which isn't good for traffic.

Because of course, it is when you expect to have to carry things like groceries and items when one drives their car instead of riding their bike.

But beyond that, it's just a bummer.

Did you forget about the third Walgrens in Mountain View at 121 E. El Camino Real at Grant Road?

As much as the convenience of the location will be missed I have to say this was one of the most poorly managed Walgreens I have ever patronized. None of their shopping carts had functional child harnesses (I had to ask a manager and they unapologetically admitted they had none!). I hope a cleaner and better managed store moves into this spot. Agree with prior posters that this and fresh & easy are significant losses to Rex manor and monta loma. It would be nice to get a good pharmacy and/or grocer on Rengstorff between 101 and central.

Yes, at this point in time, there are THREE Walgreens in Mountain View. But this one on Rengstorff is the oldest one, and it sure looks it. I recently shopped there and the employees there were very helpful to me. Now if my memory is intact, isn't this the location of the former Super Duper grocery store that was once there? I shopped there as well and that was in the late 60's and early 70's. Super Duper and now Walgreens---gone!!!!

Maybe Hobees can expand there.

I go to this location occassionally to buy specific items like tissue paper, pistachios and few times prescription drugs. I won't miss it as Safeway is nearby. Dollar store is on Middle field.I am really not sure who would move into this location. Too big for starbucks and too small for any grocery store and not sure if a nice restaurant will open up there and I doubt it because of the quality of the neighborhood el salvadoran restaurant, beauty saloon, liquor store.

Fresh and Easy closed. Walgreens closes now too. This area is so goddamn inconvenient. The city council keeps approving these weird ass town house projects with no retail to support the area. Wtf.

Not a good decision. Retirees of Redwood Villa need pharmacy and convenient items in a walking distance.

@ Al

Duly noted. I added a plug for that third MV Walgreens location.

With the new construction across the street and the value of land in Mountain View, I wouldn't be surprised if this whole plaza was replaced/updated.

I used to go to the Rengstorff store quite a lot. The drawback was that I had to cross the tracks twice to shop there. The new store at the ECR and Esquela is much more convenient and that is why I stopped going to the the other one. The Grant road store is the oldest in Mtn. View. The Rengstorff store was a grocery store some 30 years ago. I don't remember not having the store at Grant.

Please excuse my spelling of Escuela. It would be nice if Walgreens would stay on Rengstoff. It always seemed to stay busy and there really isn't anything like it on that side of the tracks. That area is vastly under served by retail establishments.

Get ready for a dollar store!

Again, perhaps Hobees can expand at this location. And as a reminder, what was in this location BEFORE Walgreens was the grocery store Super Duper. And it must have closed 30+ years ago.

But for me the only thing bad about this center is fighting traffic getting out. Especially when Caltrain keeps passing by frequently in the afternoon and early evening!!!

Well with the mandatory minimum wage increases, smaller shops can't make it.

Tear the whole lot down and build a 4 story high rise, complete with overpriced apartments and office space.

Call it, The Tracks at Rengstorff. Welcome home!

Yeah, I too live within walking distance of this location. It has been very convenient over the years. I was sad when Walgreens announced they would be closing this location as part of a larger downsizing (200 stores nationally).

It will be interesting to see what opens in it's place. Who knows, maybe a gun shop?!? That would be awesome!

My gut tells me that Chuckles and his crystal ball are spot on. You know some developer is going to rip out every strip mall they can and put up as many Beirut-tenement style high-density buildings as bribery will permit. This forces the seniors out and allows the younger folks who live ten to a bedroom in.

Wouldn't it be nice if Mountain View provided free shuttles like Palo Alto does? For those of us who can't see to drive, can't walk far, or can't afford a car, I mean?

@Barb J

Mountain View does in fact have a free shuttle. See Web Link

What's the status of the grade separation project at Rengstorff & Central Expressway? I doubt that there will be much investment in this center until the grade separation project is sorted out.
