El Camino Hospital launches new online services

Original post made on Nov 23, 2015

After two years of careful preparation, El Camino Hospital announced that its new online medical records system is now live. The upgrade not only makes it easier for patients to tap into hospital services from home, it also means the hospital will be able to share information with other hospitals in the Bay Area on a close-knit digital network.

What a waste. Read the Annual Report to see the overbilling, forgiven loans to employees and full health insurance for the employees. This is mismanagement.
Property owners pay for this. And people overcharged do, too.

I went in to the ER on Monday, Nov. 9 at 4:00 PM. Seven hours later I finally got past the Waiting Room. The staff was very apologetic about the delay. Apparently the main problem was that they couldn't transfer the data in a timely manner when transferring a patient from ER over to the regular hospital. This was the 3rd day of iCare implementation - in Silicon Valley. Having gone through a few software implementations in my own time, I know what problems can arise. But this was appalling. The idea that they couldn't come up with a workaround when dealing with serious medical problems is beyond belief.

Waste and, of all places, those who essential helped begin the digitization journey in the 60s, El Camino goes Epic. Great, they just put in 50 year old technology that is designed to solve problems from two decades ago. The 1980's called: they want their interface back.

Imagine how many patient lives could have been saved with $150M spent intelligently. Agree with previous commenter: tabula rasa on their Board.

George of Rex Manor notes that "PAMF has had this stuff for years" which is exactly what I was told in ER. Supposedly PAMF has a slightly different system, but they are along the same lines, so nothing new.
A neighbor told me today about her new grandchild being born at ECH one week after I was in there and they were still having trouble with the system. Fortunately, the nurses still knew how to 'birth them babies' and could get the job done. - No thanks to the new technology.
