Council rejects study to boost housing

Original post made on Nov 19, 2015

Opting for the "status quo," Mountain View leaders refrained from ordering new studies or conversion plans to encourage more housing in town, saying they were concerned about unintended consequences of pressing too hard for more residential development.

I can not express how happy I am that I left this town after a retaliatory eviction from 91 Church Street. (My attorney suggested I hit social media hard with this and why I posted the address here). I wish you all luck if you are fighting to stay...

As a resident of mountain view for 30 years who is currently being forced out by never ending rent increases I hope that this decision helps and does not result in the consequences that the in actions of the past had on the rest of us who liked living here as well..

What's happened to the City Council? Have all but Siegel suddenly caught really bad cases of the Common Sense Virus? Or is it just that they've finally realized that "enough is enough" AND that ultimately they answer to the voters of Mountain View?

Are you kidding me? They've always been in the pockets of developers around here. They have NEVER listened to the voters in this area. NEVER.

As a long time home owner I feel like the city is being overwhelmed with new apartments, condos, offices, and now with new the rabbit warren stuff planned for north of 101, it's all madness. Where will we find room for the cars, where will we find the water for all of this and what is going to happen to the air quality. It would be great to get rid of most of the current city council and start over.

Where is the South Bayshore neighborhood?

Why are you people getting upset about the "status quo"

How many housing units are in the planning stages? add the North Bayshore and it is easily between 10,000 and 15,000 additional units, and you want more? That's 25% to 30% more rental hosing that we currently have!

Why does Mountain View need to add all of these units?

Why can we not included cities like San Jose, who have lots of land available for redevelopment into more housing? and count that as part of the solution?

Housing will never be inexpensive here no mater what you do. The land prices dictate that.

Why can we not be grateful for all the jobs that are now being created here? Did we forget how many people had no work in the valley during the Dotcom crash of the last decade?

What worries-scares me the most is council members Siegel and Showalter. In the past we had council members who represented the entire city. We now have these 2 individuals who are activist, who only know how to divide people up into groups and stoke up anger against others for political gains.

People should never vote for candidates that are endorsed by the local newspaper, like the Voice did for Siegel-Showalter-Rosenberg.

Why are you mtn view people always trying to dump people down to san jose? Have you looked at the traffic down here lately? I think the bay area should have a "no vacancy" policy on it. Meaning no one can move in unless someone moves out.

Karen,

If you are implying that my post was "dumping on San Jose" you are incorrect.
San Jose is the largest land mass of the cities here in the South Bay. There are lots and lots of non utilized and out dated areas that can easily absorb new units.

This is an regional issue and you can not expect to have just one city solve the housing problem. Everyone will have to do their share.

Mountain View is built out, San Jose is not!

@ Sally

Oops - we forgot to change that "South Bayshore" reference in the online version!

I had asked Lenny Siegel about this, and he defined the South Bayshore as the area between Highway 85 and Rengstorff Avenue, north of Middlefield Road and south of Highway 101. It's not an official neighborhood, and my map shows that area as being part of Stierlin Estates. He said the South Bayshore term started getting tossed around in last year's election since North Bayshore was such a hot topic.

I don't think that the Council has suddenly been struck by the "common sense virus", or by remorse, or by the terrible realization that their souls may be in trouble come judgement day.

A more likely scenario is that the pipeline at Prometheus is getting just as clogged as the pipeline at the City Planning Department. The trough is overflowing for the time being.

A little pause will project the illusion of moderation, and perhaps people will start to forget the substantial amount of developers' "dark money" that got Rosenberg and Showalter elected (see this post-election Voice article: Web Link

Mountain View already has 1.7 jobs per employed resident, or 0.6 employed residents per job.

This is a result of past planning that brought in loads of offices while putting the kibosh on housing. Now it's time to build the apartments that should have been built decades ago.
