Let's call this what it is: torture. Solitary confinement is considered torture under international law. The U.S. is in violation of international human rights law with our 80,000 or so prisoners we keep in solitary. This makes the U.S. one of the leading torture states on earth.

I am disgusted but unsurprised that my own county participates in torture and internationally recognized crimes against humanity. I hope this lawsuit shines a very bright light on the injustice system in Santa Clara.

Wikipedia on Solitary Confinement:

Solitary confinement is considered to be a form of psychological torture[36] when the period of confinement is longer than a few weeks or is continued indefinitely.[48] The International Red Cross has expressed concern of ‘significant problems’ with U.S. confinement techniques, and U.S. prison policies have faced mounting legal challenges.[49] America's detention system is far below the basic minimum standards for treatment of prisoners under international law.[49] The United States' increasingly harsh treatment of its civilian prison population in maximum-security prisons ("supermax facilities") nationwide has caused an international human rights concern.[49] America’s solitary confinement practices contravene international treaty law, violate established international norms, and do not represent sound policy.[49]

I'm somewhat conservative and I even agree the confinements described in this article are barbaric and an embarrassment. I'm just surprised that the public employees who supervise the jails are the ones who raised the issue in the first place.

Hey "do the time" I agree that if u do the crime then u should do the time, however if u read the article carefully u would've read that most of the inmates in solitary haven't been told why they r there. That would indicate that the "C O's are abusing their authority and should be held accountable for their actions. It's county jail not San Quinton the inmates that were mention haven't even been convicted of a crime
