FAA: Planes flying over Palo Alto, Mountain View hit by laser

Original post made on Nov 12, 2015

Palo Altans and other Bay Area residents may be frustrated by aircraft noise since the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began its new flight program, NextGen, earlier last spring, but at least one person is allegedly taking matters into their own hands to dangerous effect, FAA officials said.

What is NextGen and why is it in our neighborhoods? The noise and vibrations from planes are known to be unhealthy for residents, so why was this implemented in our neighborhoods?

NextGen is a system for air traffic control and navigation. It is being implemented to update the old system that is way out of date. What I don't understand is all the uproar about the aircraft noise. After all, how many of us moved here when there were no airports and aircraft? Why do we feel that we are entitled to have almost silent neighborhoods? Much of the noise was here before we moved in and it could only have been expected to get worse. The sirens, leaf blowers, loud music, trains and other sounds are worse than listening to air traffic. You can't have the modern conveniences of our world without the problems that go with it. We need to quit whining and spend our time on more important issues.

Sue, we are not all frustrated by aircraft noise. I genuinely love watching the planes fly over Old Mountain View, particularly the small planes on their way to Palo Alto. It is like having an airshow in our own backyard!

Obviously the Voice is assuming that the reader has prior knowledge of this situation. I haven't a clue! And it sounds like you are assuming that the laser person is protesting the FAA, couldn't it be just some stupid malicious person?

I'd appreciate hearing the background to this story.

No. No they are not. Please tell me where this is "known". Planes fly over, they make a bit of noise, and your health is in no way affected. The noise from your own TV or a leaf blower outside is almost certainly louder, and still harmless.
