Farewell to Bumble Bee Health Foods

Original post made on Nov 9, 2015

John and Karen Farrell run a two-person crew at Mountain View's Bumble Bee Health Foods store, fielding questions about probiotics and stocking the shelves with specialty health foods, supplements and a tremendous supply of teas and herbs.

Wow, that's a bummer, I love Bumble Bee. Happy retirement to John and Karen!

My cousin recommended this place and I recently went to visit. Too bad it's closing. A nice gem in Mt View

They provided a wonderful neighborhood store. Loved it, thank you!

After 30 years in Mountain View I've moved to Oregon, but I still have warm memories of Bumble Bee, and especially of Karen's thoughtful advice and caring attitude. With BB gone, Mountain View won't be the same, but I wish Karen and John a happy (and no doubt healthy) retirement. They've certainly earned it!

So sorry to hear the news! They will be sorely missed. I have been going there for many years, not only to purchase supplements, but also to get sound advice that I cannot get anywhere else.

Dear "GOOD LUCK"

Welcome to MTN. VIEW..... It is NOT "MT.VIEW"

A common mistake, but one easily corrected.

Thanks

I depend on Karen to guide me through all of the many products which are out there, and will miss them badly! The kind of service one finds at the Bumble Bee isn't available at Whole Foods or TJ. It seems retirement was forced upon them as they only recently learned (through the grapevine) that the owner wants to develop the property. So sad.

Evidently, the property owner plans to sell or develop the strip mall. Progress, some will say.
Small businesses in Mountain View are increasingly at risk of displacement or extinction.

This is indeed sad day. Losing Bumble Bee will represent for me the last nail in the coffin of a warm and comfortable city that once was Mountain View. Aging and accepting change is hard enough but this one really pains me. Karen and John, I wish you the very best in your retirement; you have always been the kindest and most helpful proprietors in any retail establishment I've known.

Thank You so much John and Karen for all the many 20+ years you have been there to help me understand how my body works. I learned from you and you alone that in many cases I don't have to run to my doctor, complain, he/she gives me a prescription and off I go. That's OK to do and if it works for many people, then I wish them a speedy recovery. But...
I learned and it seems to have worked for me that with proper exercise, watch what you eat, and take what ever it is you would recommend I take. It was enough and hey guess what, I'm still here and in (knock on wood) good shape. I run, eat right and have 4 bottles of your supplements in the cupboard.
I will continue taking your advise and you will be missed. I truly wish you a wonderful retirement, I am around your age and you did very well with the short time given us, I believe you help countless people.
Oh and you are both the nicest people I have ever met.
Juan

Madeline Bernard is a registered user.

"Their last employee, Farrell said, left because of the high cost of rent in the area." The "preserve neighborhoods" crowd should take a look at this. Even if Mountain View never builds another speck of housing, the neighborhoods are still going to get worse.

Hi Karen & John,

Just saw the message regarding the store closing and your retirement. Happy and sad at the same time. I wish you both much happiness and enjoy your time off and the togetherness. I hope you will continue going to La Fiesta so I can get updates. Thank you for all your loving support you have provided for our community. We will miss you! The Quilici Family. (The family that lived in the duplex next to Laundromat.

Bumble Bee was my "go-to-place" whenever I needed any health foods, teas, vitamins or a homeopathic remedy for myself or my friends. Located a few blocks from where I live, John and Karen were always helpful, no matter what the problem was or how to find the right remedy for my physical problem or health concern. I'm gonna miss your being there and your helpful advice and smiling faces. Wishing the both of you a long and enjoyable retirement, Knowi your being part of my community has been a wonderful & healthful partnership that will be heartfelt and not soon replaced, by many who you served. Good life & thank you!.

Oh no! I knew this day would come, but I was hoping not for a long time. I've been coming to BB for about 20 years because of Karen and Johns's knowledge and friendliness. They've made a HUGE difference in my family's health -- the best suggestion EVER being the Wellness Formula. Godspeed to you John and Karen. May the rest of your days be filled with joy, peace and truth -- and much laughter. :-)

There were times that I felt better just walking in the store. That was 100% due to the environment John and Karen provided. Thanks so very much for being such great shop keepers and neighbors. Congratulations and enjoy your retirement!

Given this store has been around since the 70's. The City should give a discount on the store rent. Have the Farrells hire trusted people so they can hire well informed people, go on vacations and keep the store open. Deeply sadden this store is closing. You can't replace history!

Dear Karen & John,

I'm missing you both so much and all your sound advice on supplements for my weird health challenges. You've been such a help! The quality advice and convenience of procurring all the ingredients to keep me healthy will never be again, as is the case with the sounding board you both provided for me on every issue. All such a loss to everyone who knew you and all those who had yet discover you. There is nowhere to go now for that highest level, doctor recommended advice on health supplements and nutrition.

It made our Christmas the year Larry & I saw you both at The Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay, for our delicious Christmas Dinners. As you know, La Fiesta is our favorite reataurant in town, as it is yours, so our offer still stands any time you'd like to be treated to dinner there, or anywhere you want. You have our number in your old order book.

You two are the greatest, as was your completely incomparable, handy & wonderful Bumble Bee!
