Farewell to Bumble Bee Health Foods

Original post made on Nov 7, 2015

John and Karen Farrell run a two-person crew at Mountain View's Bumble Bee Health Foods store, fielding questions about probiotics and stocking the shelves with specialty health foods, supplements and a tremendous supply of teas and herbs.

A very long time customer of Bumble Bee Health Food and most especially of Karen and John Farrell who are the best source and resource of all things health. I am very happy for them, but saddened for all us customers.

Sad to say this article is poorly written, and I can certainly tell Kevin knows nothing about supplements in the way he writes. And the quote at the end of the article...completely mangled. John actually said: "When it is just about price...quality takes a hit." That refers to cheap supplements from places like CostCo, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.. They severely lack in quality. The potencies are low, the form of the vitamin is often synthetic (which often the body can not use), and they often use binders and coatings that make it difficult for the body to absorb the nutrients. John said nothing about prices being a motivator for quitting!

Everyone should also know that Bumble Bee is discounting everything in the store until they get rid of their inventory. A great time to go pick up the highest quality healthy merchandise at great prices.

Hope they have a fantastic retirement!

Over half a century ago, my father, Clifford Lewis Barnes, a pharmacist who graduated from University of California Berkeley, and his wife, Bernice Barnes, affectionately called "Bumble Bee", opened a small family drug store in Mt. View, California. Bumble Bee Pharmacy was a unique family-run drug store. It rendered a very special service to the community, offering without pretense, their knowledge, expertise and cultivating a personal connection to all those they served. When my parents retired in 1972, they past the business, Bumble Bee Heath Foods, on to one of my sisters, Karen Barnes, who then married John Farrell. Thus, Karen and John embarked on a journey and what turned out to be a life-long passion to serve the community with the same high moral values and integrity that my parents had instilled in their "three little girls". With a strong work ethic and compassion for others, Karen and John have enriched many lives over the years as they shared their plethora of knowledge about the health food industry. I love them so much. They deserve the best as they embark on a new stage, with new adventures, in their lives. It will be great whatever it turns out to be! Bumble Bee Health store will live on in the many lives it has touched.
