Change smoke detector batteries when setting clock back

Daylight savings time ends early Sunday morning, and firefighters are reminding Bay Area residents to change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms around the home when setting their clocks back an hour tonight.

We do ours as a New Year's ritual. If I did it by the time change I would never remember if I did it last turn back, or last turn fwd. I guess if you want to do it 2x per year the clock time works, but for the recommended 1x per year, New year's works as the best reminder for me.

Aren't we all supposed to have the 10 year battery now? We also should check the operation every month.
