Original post made on Sep 30, 2015

Preschool has been lauded by education advocates as an essential part of early childhood development, and important tool to make sure kids aren't behind when they start kindergarten.

Coladonato wants to spend millions of dollars to build a new school that we don't need but doesn't support preschool for the lowest-income kids?

With the achievement gap we just saw?

I don't know how this guy got on the Board but I hope his time on it is very short.

All mr. Coladonato said was that he didn't want to endorse it until he saw whether it was working.

This is reasonable. Yesterday's Vanderbilt university study of pre-K in Tennessee showed that, by second grade, students who get state funded preschool performed worse than students who were eligible but did not attend free pre-k.

Endorsing the bill is not a measure of whether you do or do not care. If pre-K is not working, then we should not expand it. Instead, we should find a different path that does work.

Sloane's remarks are out of contact and biased.

Trustee Coladonato's perspective and remarks are supported by the facts that both Forestieri and Sloane fail to cite.

There is more to this story. Common sense tells you that if it were as easy as adding preschool it would have been done years ago. It's a broader, deeper issue that goes beyond preschool and this is what other studies cite because the family and your parents play a more significant role than preschool that cannot be duplicated.

There are several other studies that show a high-quality preschool does improve outcomes for kids. Web Link

The key is high quality. Fortunately the public preschool at Castro has the highest score in the state and the other two are also good.

"A new rating system called the Quality Rating and Improvement System formally assesses the quality of a preschool program based on things like teacher qualification, teacher-child interactions and class size. Preschool classes are then given a score, with tier 1 being the worst and tier 5 being the best.

The preschool at Castro Elementary was one of two schools in Santa Clara County to earn a tier 5 score, and is one of only seven in the entire Bay Area. The others, Slater and Theuerkauf, earned a tier 4 rating."
