I remember all the old Grateful Dead/Fish concerts and what not and the police didn't really bother anyone unless called upon. It was a wonderful experience on many different levels. These shows bring a lot of economic and social diversity to towns they travel too. The police are now actively heavy handed trying to do buy/busts for drugs to bolsters their stats but why even have a show in the first place if you are just gonna harass the concert-goers?
They should just sell Shoreline to Google and be done with it already. They can bring in Taylor Swift and some Bollywood shows and it would be more fitting for the "New" Mtn.View crowd. It seems as these shows aren't wanted/appreciated anymore. Why spend your dollars where you are not wanted? This is the same reason I won't spend a penny in Palo-Alto anymore. Vote with your wallets!

I am in complete agreement with the commenter above. I live a stone's throw from Shoreline and am expecting another lovely weekend ahead with cop helicopters buzzing incessantly overhead and ravetronics blasting across the baylands. People have a right to their chosen music and that is not my beef. What is, is the way the MVPD uses these events as bait to jack up their arrest numbers, and make what's really not even a serious problem into something they can brag about. They have better things to do, like chasing down burglars, and bicycle thieves.

Although i agree with going to concerts to enjoy your music. The prevalence of drugs at those concerts is damaging to ALL in attendance. The comment of "baiting" is ridiculous. Some need to pay attention to the health affects that transpire from those drugs. How would you like to answer the door one night to hear a police officer tell you your child is dead from accidental overdose? Open up your eyes! Its not about the music its about the dangerous drugs that are infiltrating the concerts!

>The prevalence of drugs at those concerts is damaging to ALL in attendance.
ignorance (YOU chose the name): In what way is a person's voluntary use of drugs damaging to you or anyone else, let alone to "ALL" in attendance?
MDMA and LSD are both extremely safe when used intelligently. Stay hydrated, dose wisely, have trusted friends around. Both can offer quite profound transformative experiences; Steve Jobs famously said his use of LSD was one of the 2 or 3 most important experiences of his life. Does ignorant thinks it would have helped Jobs' future chances in life to be arrested and thrown in a concrete cage for this consensual personal behavior?
The War on Drugs is a crime against humanity that's often invisible to the affluent types who live in MV, since they are unlikely to be the targets of the police state. The exception is when the police and media can target concertgoers by pretending that they are "dirty hippies" or "dangerous druggies" -- rather than our neighbors, co-workers, and kids who love music and enjoy enhancing the experience with much safer and more interesting drugs than the far more common alcohol.
By prosecuting the War on Drugs the police are participating in a crime against humanity. They are public servants. Their duty should extend only to helping victims of actual crimes, not to harassing otherwise law-abiding citizens who chose to engage in consensual behavior arbitrarily suppressed by the State.

"MDMA and LSD are both extremely safe when used intelligently."
Tell that to people who fried their brains out using it "intelligently."
"Steve Jobs famously said his use of LSD was one of the 2 or 3 most important experiences of his life."
Which probably explains why he was a world-class jerk throughout his adult life.

There will be arrests, but only because there will be TONS of police churning through the crowds undercover looking for arrests.
I'm going to LOL when they post the arrest numbers, as if they actually did something besides harassing one particular group of concert goers.
Put up a sobriety check point after the country concerts, I bet you would have FAR more arrests. Have fun cops, but this is the sort of thing that gives you guys a bad name. Lets wait for their self congratulatory hog-wash report of arrests come monday. Mark my words, it's coming. Realize how much money was spent and how relatively little public risk there was.

Went to many a shows and the drugs are part of the scene. The sad part is that you and your type who want a sterile square-bare environment will probably never feel the pulse, community, spiritual connection, and communal love-vibe that can be present at these types of events.
Will there be people who cause problems? Yes. Many times these issues can be handled without heavy police tactics by roaming security who are looking to keep the peace vs. generate arrests and/or revenue. They should stick to the perimeter and/or near by and wait to be summoned by security for major violations. Besides, police don't provide first-aid anyway so a "medical" argument is not really valid.
It's frankly none of your business what consenting adults are are doing so long as they are not bothering you. Setting your personal fears/proclivities aside, these events are not about violence/criminal activity. They are about love/spirituality/connectedness primarily and sometimes drugs are part of the journey.

Has anyone had a friend or loved one killed in a traffic accident proven to be caused by someone driving after using drugs? that is how....
and please don't tell me that this can be controlled by having a trusted friend with them who will be designated driver... the trusted friends are probably engaging in same...

The old cart before horse save people from themselves argument is lame. Let's just ban cars since they are a leading cause of death. It would save thousands of lives. How about banning sugar? Banning dangerous sports should happen to because someone could get hurt. Sounds about as absurd as punish everyone for a few "short yellow bus" types who make poor choices.
Free: Yup
Judged by me: Nope
Do what you like: Yup
Busy body: Nope
Minding my business: Yup
Protect us from ourselves: Nope
Everybody's got choices.............:)

Obviously nobody here wants the truth! Until youve walked a mile in ones shoes youll never truly understand the detriment of these drugs. First hand i can say YES! I know someone who killed another in a car accident when they were under the influence and yes the court had proof. This person is now serving 15 for manslaughter so dont preach what you not know of. Another I know is dead and so his is friend because while on LSD he played russian roulette and killed both of them in one shot. Again dont preach on what you not know of. Finally another who is in a mental institution because of one dose gone wrong! So again dont preach of what you not know. These are the very reason why i walked away from that lifestyle and use them as teaching tools so our youth understands that drugs only destroy lives! Look beyond your selfish lives and pay attention to who is greatly affected the youth of today!

I know two people personally who were killed by riding with the wrong person. Should we ban cars? Should we ban guns so some dolts don't go any play Russian Roulette? People die everyday from personal choices and over indulgence. Heck, someone reading this paper today might not make it home tonight because of riding with the wrong person or another who overindulges and causes death/injury. So what is the answer? Ban everything from everybody to protect us all from ourselves? How has the war on drugs worked for us so far? COMPLETE FAILURE!!!! European/South American countries that have legalized and decriminalized drugs have seen their use decline. Strange.
Besides, do you consult the man made rule book on everything you do? Most people don't. I don't smoke crack and shoot meth because I don't want to. No because I can't get any or it's illegal. If it was legal I still would not do it. YOU CAN'T LEGISLATE MORALITY! No matter how much you want it or believe it to be true. You simply can't. All those instances were already illegal yet those people did them anyway. The law (already in place) did not stop them. Never dose. Laws are a response after the fact and rarely considered before being broken (no deterrent effect). Even for the most serious crimes like murder (it's been studied).

Why should innocent lives be taken by those who CHOSE to take illicit drugs that alter your state of mind and physical abilities? It's not the innocent's choice to die. What right do you have to take my son's life away?
Don't understand why Old Head is for drugs? To many lives are taken because of it.

Last time I went to farmer's market at Cal Street location, there was no cop on duty managing the pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the intersection, maybe that has changed? But when Shoreline has a concert the cops are called out to provide crowd control and protective services for those who abuse drugs and booze. Who pays for the MVPD services provided to Shoreline concerts?

PEACE AND LOVE is ignorant with this statement: "otherwise law-abiding citizens who chose to engage in consensual...." whats wrong with that statement? Thats right "law-abiding " you do know that the drugs in discussion are illegal! Think before speak. That doesnt make them law-abiding citizens

I don't want to be in the area during times of event traffic, but neither The View, this website, nor the Shoreline website gives times of this or other events there.
Why are Shoreline event times not easily available?

I'm not "for drugs". I'm for freedom of choice and freedom from government interference unless it's harming others. Look, no one wants to see anyone harmed, period. To say that drugs= harm to others is like saying cars= harm to others. There are people who drink and do drugs of the legal and illegal persuasion everyday and nothing happens. The guy above lets his personal proclivities cloud his judgment and you are letting your personal fears cloud yours as if all deaths in society is attributable to drugs and/or alcohol.
People die everyday from all sorts of perfectly legit reasons: accidents, injuries, medical conditions ect.
Like I said should we ban all cars to keep your son safe? Should we ban sports to keep him safe? Should we ban school because he may get stressed by the pressure? Should we ban Cal Train in case the pressure gets to much (like we've seen before)? Should we ban all guns because the guy aboves friends played a dumb game?
Think about what you are really saying here. You're dealing in the "what if" and "this happened to someone I know" conjecture arena. All I'm saying is imagine using that same logic for all "potential dangers" in life and society.
I'll say it again. You can't legislate morality and man made laws that conflict with deeply held personal beliefs/freedoms are not a deterrent. No one wants kids killed, people shot, car accidents, over doses ect but they are a fact of life in a fee society and no law will stop them. It's all feel good nonsense.
On the flip-side there are countless (the majority) people who don't cause any harm to anyone who do any number of potentially self-hazardous things: driving, sky diving, drinking, sports, recreational shooting, hunting, drugs, car racing, mountain climbing ect.
I guess I just don't see your point. If wasting the taxpayers money to fund this intrusion into peoples lives makes you feel better then I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

@When Is It?
I get alerts on my phone. I subscribe to the MV Police Department Nixle feed (using the Nixle app). I've also signed up for e-mail notifications.
On top of that, I'm following the MV Police Twitter feed. This is a more thoughtful strategy than signing up for the Shoreline Amphitheatre's e-mail newsletter.
Of course, the MVPD has a Facebook presence. I don't use Facebook myself, but MVPD does use this to communicate to the local community as well as followers beyond city limits.
Anyhow, you have been provided several information sources here.
Good luck.

It wasn't so bad at all. The patrons seemed nice and were polite for the most part. It wasn't Sunday school by any means, but I would welcome this show back well before any of the big country acts. Funny how the cops target this show and not the drunken fight-orgies that the country shows always seem to regress into.
Don't miss out
on the discussion!
