Chevys Fresh Mex in Mountain View -- closed?

Original post made by Fajita, Old Mountain View, on Sep 5, 2015

I drove by there tonight and it was dark and empty with a big white sign on the door. Is it closed for renovations or did they close down this location? Why then? Always seemed a popular place.

The Chevy's corporate website no longer shows the Mountain View location. The brand is collapsing. San Francisco, Dixon, Redwood City, Foster City, Mountain View all closed now.

Any chance this has anything to do with the higher minimum wage? I think it bears looking into.

"Any chance this has anything to do with the higher minimum wage?"

Do you have a need to beat dead horses?

How about: Chevy's, as a corporation, is going down the tubes -- NOT because of a higher minimum wage, but because of bad corporate decisions.

Or is that too hard for you to understand?

Wait I thought the plastic bag ban was to blame? Or was it the styrofoam packaging ban?

Actually, it was when child labor was outlawed. You know, actual adults (with adult wages) had to be hired instead...

I preferred the Chinese restaurant that used to be there before Chevy's opened. It had a nice indoor waterwheel and was nicely designed and laid out. They had good dim sum.

I'm sure the rent in this area figures into the decision. The closest ones still left are in San Jose, South San Francisco and Union City. Lower rents for sure. I was up at the one near the airport (SFO) a couple of months ago. It was very very busy and the parking lot was full.

I am eagerly awaiting the next column of Peninsula Foodist blogger extraordinaire Elana Kadvany. I am sure she will deliver the full enchilada on Chevy's Mtn View closure.

A mediocre restaurant tried to keep things going in a competitive market filled with people who are have options of getting better quality food elsewhere. That's what happened.

Sizzler and Marie Calendar's are gone too for the same reasons: It's tough to try and sell low quality stuff to people who 1)know what real quality food taste like, and 2) have multiple options available to get that better quality food.
Yes, it really is a mystery why it is not there anymore.

You cannot compare Chevy's to Sizzler or Marie Calendar. Name another restaurant that has better Fresh Mex style Mexican food than Chevy's. You cannot!

"You cannot!"

Sure I can, it's quite easy. I went to Yelp and ran sown the list saying "Yep, better, better, much better, waaay better"

Lower quality food but at a medium quality price point. That's the bad business model that resulted in them not having enough customers to make the business viable. The pallets of bay area diners know better than say the pallets in Phoenix AZ, where places like Chevy's thrive.

Do you think there's some other reason it was closed other than the amount of profit it was generating? And why aren't there enough customers to make the business viable? Well, now you go back to my initial post.

I liked Mr Chow's Chinese fast food too, and was bummed when it closed, but I understand the reasons it did: not enough people liked going there enough to keep them in business. My tastes were different from the majority of potential customers, just like it is with Chevy's now. A few are bummed but most don't care because they didn't like going there in the first place.
That is the ONLY reason Chevy's in MV is closed. Not enough people liked going there to keep them in business.

The quality of the food at this location had declined in recent years. It was almost as if the staff preparing the food was just there to collect a paycheck and didn't give a damn. The hot local economy probably has a lot to do with it. Good people are hard to find and harder to keep.

I find that's the same thing going on up the road at Chili's. We used to go there, but in the past years, each time we do its a huge let down on quality and "care" by the employees. We've stopped trying at that location.

The taco trailers are kicking but!! Has anyone noticed at Calderon and ElCamino the Mexican trailer truck is hella busy across at Jack-in-the Box,empty. Same with Rengstorff and ElCamino another trailer truck by the mattress store, busy!! It's a new trend. More authentic at 1/4 of the price. No overhead.

Customer Service, a lost art. It's everywhere the grocery store, department stores. No customer engaging no eye contac it's gotten worse. Not surprised Chevey's is gone.
