Water-tracking app wins city contest

Original post made on Aug 26, 2015

Mountain View's first-ever App Challenge has crowned a winner: "Waterwise," a nifty piece of software that will allow homeowners to remotely check how much water they're using at any given time -- a bit like a SmartMeter for water.

Waterwise seems like a deserving winner. There are a lot of things that can be done with hourly water meter readings, including alerting homeowners to slow leaks, big leaks, and helping them plan their usage to avoid going into the expensive high-priced usage tiers. I think $100 is a very reasonable amount to pay for something like this app and hardware if it will last 5 or more years and if it doesn't require frequent battery replacement.

The WaterWise app would track total water usage, while the Hydrawise product you "researched" is not much more than any one of many internet connected irrigation controllers. Research ought to include the ability to READ, although maybe it is just a comprehension problem.

Well deserved win! This could be a good cost effective alternative over replacing the old water meters.
