"A Spare the Air Smog Alert has been issued for Monday due to unhealthy levels of smog and smoke in the air, and residents are being advised both to limit their exposure to the unhealthy conditions..."

and
"It's important that Bay Area residents protect their health by avoiding outdoor activities..."

and
"Area residents are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to unhealthy air conditions by limiting outdoor activities...and remain indoors with doors and windows closed..."

BUT
"Area residents are also encouraged to walk, bike..."

I'm not sure of how much credibility one earns by cautioning against outdoor activities over and over and over again and then casually suggesting that we should go out and ride our bikes: encouraging us to breathe unhealthy air/smoke even more deeply! You might as well tell people to enjoy a pack of Marlboros on their ride too! (Ick!)

This weekend, the smoke from the fires has already burnt up my lungs as well as aggravating my little ones health issues. I have unavoidable, public-transit unfriendly travel on Monday, and I'm committing to walk for a portion of it however, with the repeated instructions to protect our health, I will be limiting our exposure to the air and smoke by driving most of the day. With that we'll do our best to burn the least amount of fuel possible using efficient routes so we can stay off the road as much as possible.

Whilst telling people to walk or bike in the unhealthy air you don't want them breathing by "remain[ing] indoors with doors and windows closed", after the call for using public transit why not include some direct encouragement to limit unnecessary driving.

For example: if you don't *need* Starbucks to survive, why not consider skipping that stop for Spare the Air days? Starbucks can take the hit and your wallet will be up $5-10.

I applied common sense and figured that if you can walk or run some errands other than in a car, that'd be good, but don't go for a strenuous run or bike ride; hit the spin class or treadmill.

It's just semantics but agreed some might not grasp the concept if they are unfamiliar with things.
