Cyclists cheer improved bike lanes

Original post made on Aug 6, 2015

A typical bike lane normally doesn't get much attention, but this bike lane is hardly typical.

Is a map of this bike lane network available? The article and the linked web site have only minimal information about what is being developed.

We would love to travel by bicycle around Mountain View, but aside from the Stevens Creek Trail, the city's bicycle routes are way too scary for the kids. Cars are constantly speeding, running stop signs, and parking in the bike lanes.

In before the unhinged ravings of the anti-cyclists.

I'm glad that Mountain View is making bicycling a safer and more convenient option. I used to commute by bike on Shoreline across 101 and it was always very satisfying to pass so many cars lined up and waiting to get into Google land. But it requires being very comfortable with urban biking! Now that I have pre-teen kids who still aren't the most attentive when riding a bike I'm very happy to see additional protections added for them! Hopefully some of those people in cars that sit on Shoreline every day will soon feel comfortable to get out of their car and get some exercise while they commute to work, by bike!

@Parent,

There's more info on the city's upcoming bike plans in this transportation study from last year. Check out pages 4 - 8.

Sounds good in theory, but what are the costs of doing this?

We need to know both the dollars spent to put these in, and more importantly, any reduction in lanes, lane space, or speeds for cars?

We should all be for bike and ped improvements that do not reduce our ability to get around using cars. But when you start to take away car capacity, it's a different matter. For one thing, privileging bikes is discriminatory against people who are old or who have disabilities - more adults can drive a car than can ride a bike, and that's even more true when you are getting groceries or other daily needs.

Bikes are a wonderful supplement and sometime option for a subset of people, but cars are a requirement of daily life.

More people on bikes = less people in cars. Many cannot commute by bike so getting more of those who can will help those who cannot. Just a fact.
Knowing that the only way to alleviate traffic is to have less cars using the road, ow would YOU reduce the amount of cars on the road?
