electric scooters on the Stevens Creek Trail

Original post made by parent, Old Mountain View, on Jul 23, 2015

The city has posted signs along the Stevens Creek Trail saying that electric scooters will be allowed on the trail starting on August 1. Does anyone know exactly what is the definition of "electric scooter"? Is there a maximum weight or size of the vehicle? I'm assuming these are significantly larger and heavier than bicycles. Momentum = mass x velocity.

I may be wrong, but I had assumed these were seniors mobility scooters.

Can anyone clarify?

The signs said electric bicycles and electric scooters would be allowed beginning August 1. I assume that an electric scooter is some kind of motorcycle that does not require pedalling. Is a "mobility scooter" a golf cart or a wheelchair or something inbetween?

I don't mean to be unkind in any way, but I wonder why it is that citizens curious about questions like these so often choose to ask other citizens (and most of us have no more clue), rather than directing the question to the people most likely to know?

My suggestions, assuming the inquiry is serious: Either telephone the responsible City department (a tiny bit of research would make clear which one that is), or use the Ask Mountain View facility offered by the City website. It's a click button down the page on the main Contact-Us page: Web Link Ask Mountain View creates an information request that is then logged, routed to the appropriate department, and tracked. Responses usually are prompt and authoritative.

I believe this will achieve an authoritative response much more efficiently than asking the random citizenry that happens to read Town Square postings.

Good luck, and you're welcome.
