It's getting dangerous to simply live your life around here.

20 years ago we used to see officers pulling people over frequently and writing them moving violations.
When was the last time this has been a frequent sight?
Drivers know this, know the cops either don't care or can't care, so they drive with unapologetic selfishness and life threatening /ending recklessness.

When will the cops start caring?
Honestly, I would love to see an MVPD statement on this.
These drivers are killing people? LITERALLY killing people.
We need enforcement! We can see the cops when they write tickets, so it's apparent when they are not.

It is not fair to claim that the cops don't care unless you know them personally and can vouch for that statement. The fact is that they are greatly outnumbered and have to pick and choose the worst violations to enforce, leaving lots of sloppy and dangerous driving to go unpunished. If you want to blame someone, start with the City Council that sets the budget for the police department.

"hit by the driver"? More likely "hit by a car driven by".

This is a sad situation... let's hope that it doesn't turn out the way it ended for the bicyclist who was hit at the corner of El Camino Real & San Antonio earlier this week. The Voice and Merc are both reporting that the bicyclist has died of his injuries.

In both of these cases, the roadway design is part of the problem. Look at the photo of the Dale Avenue/El Camino intersection with this article. The corners are wide and sweeping, which encourages drivers to take the turns fast. The distance a pedestrian or bicyclist has to cross is unnecessarily wide, because the auto lanes are far wider than they need to be.

City of MV Transportation staff - PLEASE look at how the roadway design could be changed to improve safety. It is absolutely possible to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists here (and also at the San Antonio/El Camino intersection) while causing little to no inconvenience to motorists. These kinds of solutions are implementable - and sorely needed - all over our city. I understand that there's an extra step involved here because El Camino is a state highway, controlled by Caltrans - but if the City is serious about improving safety, Caltrans will work with us. There are even grants available to analyze and design the improvements.

Let's push our City leaders to make our roads safer for all, so no one has to needlessly die or get seriously injured again.

If you read the rest of the sentence you would have noticed that I said:
"the cops either don't care or can't care"
"Can't care" covers the budgetary reasons or other reasons they cops can't control.

Whatever the reasons, they are not writing enough tickets to make anyone think there's a risk of getting caught.
I stand by my statement.

It wasn't at the corner...

That being said, drivers need to pay attention, and pedestrians need to be safe.

I drove by the Shoreline Safeway, and true to form, regardless of time of day, there was a jaywalker running across to get to Safeway.

And the new jaywalking hotspot is Rengstorff between Walgreens and the new apartments....not as bad as the Shoreline Safeway but pretty close

My grandson and I were crossing Miramonte with a green pedestrian light moving towards Grant on Cuesta Drive. Many others walk this intersection. Fortunately I held his 6 year old hand because THREE vehicles crossed in front of us without even oiling in our direction. They looked left for other vehicles but nut ahead as we neared their car hoods. It was really frightening. Encouraging people to walk for their health is a joke in Silicon Valley! It's a walk if death, Russian Roulette at any busy intersection. Blaming our police officers is quite unfair when it is vehicle drivers that pose the greatest threat!!!

I used to live in Mountain View--and before that in NYC. I carried an umbrella with me always in NYC and banged the cars with it as they tried to cut me (the pedestrian) off. I got sworn at a lot but it was worth it--and today with lighter materials, it might actually do damage to the car. An umbrella would look strange in drought-ravaged California, but maybe a big stick?

I cross the street with smartphone in my hand holding it up so all drivers can see I take a video or ready to take a picture of them. And it works very well! The intersection Shoreline and Write is very dangerous and I had to cross it every day on my way to/from Caltrain station

This intersection is wide because it is used by the large trucks to deliver goods to the currently closed grocery store. What is not specified in the article; was the pedestrian crossing Dale or El Camino Real?

I'm willing to bet the 'cause' of this will be a combination of jay walking and driver inattentiveness. But I didn't witness this accident. I have seen almost accidents as people, mostly the elderly, try to cross El Camino at this spot.

Drivers do not understand and it is not legal to enter a crosswalk in which a person is walking, you cannot drive in a crosswalk until all people have reached the sidewalk. Once a person steps into a crosswalk you as a driver have to wait, no exceptions.

All intersections have cross walks, marked or not.

99% of the close calls I have had while walking were caused by the above.

And yet there is no crosswalk across El Camino Real at this point, marked or otherwise.

Nor are there any legal crosswalks across El Camino Real between the intersections at Bernardo and Sylvan, regardless of the side streets to the south or the driveways on both sides.

So until we know which street the pedestrian was crossing, talk about crosswalks is fine, just not relevant to this story.
