(I posted this comment on the article about the pedestrian hit today at El Camino & Dale, but I'm re-posting here because it is just as relevant to this situation.)

This is a sad situation... let's hope that it doesn't turn out the way it ended for the bicyclist who was hit at the corner of El Camino Real & San Antonio earlier this week. The Voice and Merc are both reporting that the bicyclist has died of his injuries.

In both of these cases, the roadway design is part of the problem. Look at the photo of the Dale Avenue/El Camino intersection with this article. The corners are wide and sweeping, which encourages drivers to take the turns fast. The distance a pedestrian or bicyclist has to cross is unnecessarily wide, because the auto lanes are far wider than they need to be.

City of MV Transportation staff - PLEASE look at how the roadway design could be changed to improve safety. It is absolutely possible to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists here (and also at the San Antonio/El Camino intersection) while causing little to no inconvenience to motorists. These kinds of solutions are implementable - and sorely needed - all over our city. I understand that there's an extra step involved here because El Camino is a state highway, controlled by Caltrans - but if the City is serious about improving safety, Caltrans will work with us. There are even grants available to analyze and design the improvements.

Let's push our City leaders to make our roads safer for all, so no one has to needlessly die or get seriously injured again.

I think crossing in the middle of the street is the problem. No reason for you to spam that same comment here

Very tragic accident for both involved parties and their families. My heart and prayers go out to all of them.
