Thor leaves lasting legacy at Foothill

Original post made on Jul 8, 2015

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District has been the center of attention lately, from launching its new baccalaureate program to being chosen to lead Gov. Jerry Brown's state-wide initiative to transform online education in community colleges.

Thor has three strikes against her. FHDA service to LOCAL students has disastrously deteriorated under her tenure.

First, under her tenure, the number of out-of-state and international students exploded on both campuses. She claimed falsely it was “diversity”, but it actually was a blatant money grab that forced local students out of classes taught by first-rate instructors. Out-of-state and I-students got preferential admission dates. Local students got the dregs. This is supposed to be a “Community College”, not a “Non Community College”, or at least that’s what Foothill’s so-called “Mission Statement” says!!! False words are cheap from bad administrators.

Second, she heavily pushed the expansion of “online classes”. Online classes may be cheap to teach and profitable, but any instructor or student with any experience will tell you that they are grossly inferior compared to face-to-face (f2f) classes taught in a classroom. They denigrate the quality of FHDA education and the reputation of FHDA.

Third, like all egoistic chief administrators, she wants to leave her permanent legacy at FHDA. Foothill College already has a very expensive excess of intrenched administrators. She has proposed building a huge, unnecessary, and very costly administrative “Taj Mahal” covering all of Parking Lot 7 in front of the Foothill Firehouse. This not only would encourage the hiring of more unaffordable and useless administrators. It also would eliminate approximately another 150 student parking spaces; parking spaces desperately needed on a campus already starved for local student parking.

I and many other instructors at FHDA are glad that she is gone. She has done her best to destroy FHDA as a resource for local and deserving students.

"Even though we had to cut millions of dollars, we didn't have one single person come in to complain about the cuts or the process," she said.

That's not quite accurate. There was considerable rancor with the way Thors administration arbitrarily and capriciously administered those cuts, much to the detriment of students. Especially for the 20% of staff positions that were eliminated, many in key roles related to enrollment and student success.

Perhaps the MV Voice would better serve their community if they had done a little better in their investigative reporting.
