Experts: Rising sea level needs to be top priority

Original post made on Jun 24, 2015

Sea levels are already rising along the San Francisco Bay and local creeks, and officials can't waste time in finding a fix, experts said at a June 19 conference to address the issue.

Just to keep things in perspective about man made global warming:

What is verifiable is that the ice cores indicate Greenland has experienced dramatic temperature shifts many times over the past 100,000 years.

From The History of Greenland

We have some facts to work with. People should deal with the facts, not emotional or monetary hype.

When I worked at C&C Auto Wreckers, about a 1/4 acre was under water at higher tides. Did it stop our business? No. We also did not demand relief by the County of San Mateo. WE LIVED WITH IT!
When planning for a 100 year event, that means an accuracy of +/- ONE HUNDRED YEARS. An earthquake on the faults located on " The Ring of Fire " may be of a far greater concern to alter coastlines. How good are structures when flattened by the tectonic plate readjustment called an earthquake?
Are people ready to spend $Billions over a an event that has a +/- one hundred years of actually happening?

You are much better off by placing a sum of money into a banking account and wait for the compound interest to pile up. Or do some people have to justify the enormous amounts that they are paid?

There were once many people who actually denied global warming even existed, vehemently, but mostly for emotional/political or greed. Most are singing a different tune now, trying to deny their past denial and shifting the argument slightly to accommodate this. Well, most anyway.

Glad it's being rationally discussed most now. It took them a while, but they finally got it. Well, most anyway.

<I>"There has been an 8-inch rise over the last century, and there is an expected 3- to 4-foot rise over the next century," Eshoo said, referring to findings by the International Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Locally, sea levels by 2030 are predicted to rise between 6 inches to one foot; by 2050, the mid-projection is up to 2 feet. By 2100, the average expected is 3 feet and up to 5 1/2 feet, according to a 2012 study ("Surging Seas") by the nonprofit organization Climate Central, Griggs said.</i>

Five and a half feet of sea level rise by 2100 requires an average rate of nearly 20 mm/yr.

According to the The Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level California, from Crescent City to San Diego, has 18 tide gauges, and 8 of them have records going back 60 years or more. Analysis of the past 60 years in two 30 year time series shows that from 1954 through 1983 those 8 gauges average 1.6 mm/yr of sea level rise, and from 1984 through 2013 those same gauges average 0.4 mm/yr. None of them show an increase.

Globally satellite data kept by Colorado University's Sea Level Research Group goes back 22 years, and from 1992 through 2003 the rate of sea level rise was 3.5 mm/yr and from 2004 through 2014 the rate has dropped to 2.9 mm/yr That figures out to a deceleration of minus -0.05 mm/yr².

Anyone with some curiosity and modest Excel ability can verify these numbers..

You are arguing that global climate change is just a natural cyclic event and the fact that a large spike in temp began with and continues with our industrial revolution?

I would check that the TCE monitors on the superfund site you live on are operating normally. No credible scientist is in agreement with you.

It's a no win situation for the average Joe. The only ones that get RICHER THEN RICH are the ones running this. What can they do?
Put up a wall?
No matter what "They" decide to do, it will end up costing us $$$$$$$$$ and the only ones making $ will be the ones on top.
Mother Nature will do what she pleases and always has. All they can and will do is tell us to quit driving, while they drive to work and back.
I agree the world feels different then it used to. The days do feel warmer a bit, but their solution is always money, money, money.

Lot of uneducated people denying history it seems. Of course it happens to be the liberals, because thy are the ones that want to liberate you from your money in your wallet. They think this so called global warming is something new, just started happening today. This enables them to take more money from you and me. Maybe the best solution would be not to build in those area. If you do live there, sell now, the market is red hot.

@steve case, don't bother posting facts, they don't want to hear anything that isn't sky-is-falling drama. Plus they want to force everyone to THEIR idea of how things should be.

Oh, and the money. And to that I say "I'm all right Jack, keep your hands offa my stack"

I'm not worried, because what these sea level stories don't tell you is that the sea level they report isn't the real sea level, but an imaginary sea level that we would have if all things were equal, which they're not.

Read about it for yourself. It's called glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). During the last ice age, the weight of the glaciers dented the continents, and they're still springing back. The land masses are rising and the sea basins are getting deeper. For this reason, sea level studies apply GIA to get an estimate of where the sea level would be if the continents weren't changing so that they can compare old values against new values. There's no malice or fraud here, it's just a way to estimate the effect of climate change on sea level.

The media, which doesn't understand science anywhere beyond a headline, then misrepresents this as the sea level is rising, and our politicians and pundits don't have the time to become scientific experts, and cite the media in their fears about sea level rising. There is no such thing as one "sea level". It's affected by gravitational irregularities, ocean currents, and weather. In some places it's been rising (new Orleans, because NOLA is sinking), in others it's been falling (new england, since new england is rising).

I, for one, am not panicking, and if this panic becomes worse, I'll buy some beach front property for cheap from people who are scared.

NASA got flooded during El Nino because of torrential rain and storm swell.
