I filed a police report for a stolen wallet, and the thief racked up just as much debt, but other than a confirmation that the report was received, there was zero follow up.

Since when does the Showers Drive Target have an escalator? Perhaps this photo was taken at the Sunnyvale Target?

This story isn't quite complete. Did the thieves use several cards/cash from the stolen wallet? Did they go on a spree at several stores in order to rack up over ten grand in purchases? Or did they use one card in one store? If so, wouldn't that have raised a red flag at the store? Just how often are people buying $10,000 in merchandise in a single shopping stop?

Good catch Mtn View Mom. Another fine example of poor reporting among news organizations.

Main question: why is one so stupid to leave a wallet un secured in a shopping cart?

The reporter was just repeating what Sgt. Jaeger said regarding it being the Target on Showers. Don't shoot the messenger.

I agree sdg499 about leaving wallet unattended. I saw a woman leave her purse wide open and unattended in a shopping cart at Safeway. When she came back I told her it was not wise and she just scoffed at me in disgust.
