High school district to revise homework policy

Original post made on May 29, 2015

Students feeling swamped with homework may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District took a definitive step Tuesday night, May 26, toward revamping its homework policies to lighten the workload on students and compel teachers to be mindful about what they ask of students.

I recommend that parents and administrators look at the models that other schools throughout California and the Bay Area have adopted. Challenge Success, the educational non-profit,Web Link also collects research data that demonstrates that there is no correlation between the amount of homework given and academic success.

I also wish that some schools or some teachers could look at the flipped school model where homework is done in class with the teacher's assistance and the lectures are viewed as homework at home. Probably not appropriate for all classes but likely good for a broad range of subjects.

What happens when these pitiful students actually graduate (hopefully from college) and enter the real world with real world competitors? I really don't think their employers will feel compelled to coddle them when they can't cope with the workload. No, they'll fire them and hire someone who is up to the task. Don't cripple your child by expecting too little of them.

I'm sure many teachers do need to modify homework expectations, but it's not all up to them to address these concerns. Many over-stressed kids are over-scheduled kids, but they and their parents would never dream of asking their coaches to shorten or eliminate practices, wouldn't expect theater directors or orchestra leaders to shorten or eliminate rehearsals, etc. There are too many families that expect to have it all - challenging courses, high GPAs, multiple high-level extra-curriculars, and happy, healthy kids. Maybe you can't have it all.

[Portion removed due to offensive language] I guarantee you have no [Portion removed due to offensive language] clue of the stresses and workloads that students, especially in this area, are put through. Yeah, you went through high school. Back when things were DIFFERENT. Side by side comparison of then and now is good for looking to improve things, but this disrespectful [Portion removed due to offensive language] that is talking about something you clearly are [Portion removed due to disrespectful comment] to understand and empathize with is honestly so appalling. I can say with confidence that parents like these are a strong influence on students, acknowledging the too many students who have committed suicide based on issues like these.
