Breaking the mold with Middle College

Original post made on May 27, 2015

High school isn't a great fit for everyone, with its 50-minute periods, hours of daily homework and smattering of school spirit at rallies and football games. Rather than tough it out for four years, some 60 students in Mountain View, Los Altos and Palo Alto have found in alternative in Middle College.

I can attest to the amazing work done by Middle Colleges. My daughter started at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, and was unhappy there from day one. She transferred to Canada College for her junior and senior years, and came out with a place at UCLA and a lot of college credits. She felt that the teachers respected her, that they embraced her learning style and encouraged her enthusiasms. A peer of hers, who attended the Foothill Middle College, will start his PhD at Harvard in the Fall.

I often felt that the mainstream educational system was less about education and more about crowd control. That was definitely not the case at the Middle College. These programs offer a stellar educational opportunity for our incredibly gifted, motivated and non-mainstream kids.

As the parent of a former Middle College student - I can't say enough good things about Mike and Trish. Great teachers, great role models, they build a supportive community for the Middle College kids. Thanks!

We cannot say enough good things about Middle College, including the mentioned two "high school" teachers.

Our son was very unhappy at Mountain View High his sophomore year. Thankfully, we heard about Middle College and he was accepted.

He is now a professor at a New York university.
