MV City Council Recall Petition re Dedicated Bus Lanes

Original post made by OldMV, Old Mountain View, on May 6, 2015

For those of you who wish to "sign" it, the following is a link to the recall petition for councilmembers Rosenberg, Showalter, and Kasperzak. It was prompted by their shocking vote in favor of VTA's plan to destroy El Camino Real as a viable automobile commuting and shopping routs.

Drat! Only 616 signatures? I did my part. I signed it three times using my regular account plus two other fake ones that I use for things like this.

I also got about ten of my friends from New York to sign it. Look, I'm sure I'm not alone in my efforts. If you haven't already faked some sigs, please take a few minutes to do so.

With so few signatures people might conclude that most community members support having a bus lane!

I appreciate the enthusiasm, and informal petitions are great. But an actual recall petition involves several steps that have not yet been taken. There is good news on the plan of VTA staff for bus-only lanes on El Camino. Staff wants more money and plans to ask the VTA Board (local politicians from across the County) to place on the June or November ballot in 2016 a further county-wide sales tax increase. If we can continue to publicize the folly of the plan for bus-only lanes, the Board would be foolish to approve the plan. It would doom any measure in 2016 requiring two-thirds voter approval.

It's dead in the water, like everything else Gary Wesley is involved with.

We looked to see if this petition would be worth the effort. The problem is that VTA's BRT proposal is rock solid so most of the voting residents are supportive of the Council's decision.

We have to pick our battles.

Yes, dedicating a lane on ECR to BRT is just not going to happen. The council has made its opposition clear. The latest ploy to pose a need for a sales tax has tipped VTA's end plan. It will go down in flames as well.
