Mountain View is no Ferguson

Original post made on May 1, 2015

For the 130 people gathering last week at the Mountain View Senior Center auditorium, there came a moment when you could hear a pin drop.

Good to have a discussion. If police arrest for crimes in the streets and not (so much) in the suites, then more poor than richer people are going to face arrest and prosecution (even if both groups committed crimes at the same rate). Most people believe that most crimes are committed by poor people who tend to be in racial minorities. But we don't know because of the difference in detection. As to body cameras, of course they should be on for every encounter and not just when the officer(s) acted appropriately.

So black MV residents face the police as "criminal suspects" at roughly *10 times* the rate of whites, Hispanics at roughly *twice* the rate, yet "Mountain View is no Ferguson?" Despite the blandly self-congratulatory headline, those stats show quite clearly that MV, like every other American city, operates with the same fundamental structural white supremacism as Ferguson. And unless black MV residents are 10x as evil as their white neighbors they have very good reason to distrust the police.

Obviously, an affluent, majority-white city is not equivalent to an economically depressed majority black one but what exactly is this article trying to pitch?

Look at the racially motivated attacks on rapid bus service from San Jose to Mountain View. Most of our kitchen staff in our beloved restaurants are Hispanic, but I guess they should just magically materialize from the neighborhoods in SJ to serve us here.

Sparty is a registered user.

The ridiculous assumption is that police are driving around and only make arrests based on what they see. Not every arrest is a stop.

There are police cars outside of Walmart all the time while they make busts.

Some people apparently think the police officers can see through walls up to 500 yards away are just happen to be driving down Showers when someone is shoplifting/faking checks/whatever.

The human rights commission should do two things...break down those numbers even more and see which arrests came from requests for service/warrants and simply grab a scanner and start listening to calls.

Better yet go on several ride alongs

Someone engaged in more race-baiting above with a post claiming that some comments in opposition to dedicated bus lanes are "racially motivated" because Hispanic kitcken workers need to get to Mountain View on buses from San Jose! Maybe it is just another VTA employee playing games. There is no new proposed express bus from San Jose to Mountain View. The proposal is for bus-only lanes starting in Santa Clara and going to University Avenue in Palo Alto. If the comment writer is not a VTA employee, he or she might want to complain about the VTA's "racist" plan for bus-only lanes starting only in Santa Clara. And don't forget to also complain about "racist" wages, rents and national boundaries.

It's sad hat Grand Wizard Gary is twisting the truth again. The dedicated lane is a massive speedup of express service even if you start your journey south of it.

The constant denials is very common in the south where bus routes are constantly attacked to keep "them" away from "us.l"

Sorry Gary, but this is America and we have this silly thing called the Constitution. You should read it sometime!

21st century and we still haven't left this ugly chapter in American history behind us. :(

The VTA staff and its paid consultants have evidently resorted to race-baiting to in attacking opponents of wasteful bus-only lanes on El Camino. Notice they have nothing to say about wages or rents and post with phony names.
