Going beyond the 'hour' of code

Teaching computer science and coding to young kids is a fresh and relatively unexplored frontier in public education that's experiencing an explosion of interest. The recent push to get more STEM fields into the classroom has millions participating in the annual "hour of code" event, and schools and local education companies are working to take it to the next level.

There's also online MOOC courses from Udacity, Edx, Coursera on intro to programming in Java, Python, etc.. which are based on the University Courses. After getting your feet wet with Khan Academy or one of the other web intros to programming and you have time to do the homework and projects, you should consider a more rigorous introduction from one of these MOOCs.
